I received the rev. C A.K. Bowie today. It
is the third one I have tried, so I thought I
knew what to expect. I expected the super
thick blades with rather shallow fullers - a
really heavy blade. The specs of this one
are: leangth 15.75 in., blade leangth 10 in.
blade width 2.5 in., blade is 9/16 thick. The
fullers are nice and deep. I have not had a
chance to weigh it yet, but I seems to be
about 1/2 to 3/4 lb. more than my 15 in. A.K.
Looking at it from the top appers to have a
even taper from the handle to tip. The tang
is slightly tapered from 9/16 down to 3/8.
The other 2 A.K. Bowies were thicker at the
cutting edge, this one is thinner. The
balance point is just in front of the handle.
I like the dropped point- thanks, Yvsa!
These changes have really changed the way
the knife can be used. Instead of being a
blade heavy chopper, it can chop and slice
as well. I like to choke up on the blade for
better control of the blade, sometimes.
Modifying the recosso would help. Also,
rounding off the part of the butt that hangs
down would make a three finger hold more
comfortable. These two changes are just
personal prefferences. I really think this
knife is comming in to its own, at least at
this thickness. At 3/4 in. thick I think we
are back to sharpened pry bar. I wonder if
Sanu started out with the super thick blade
or went from thinner to thick on the 3 or 4
He made. Anyway, I like this thinner blade
and that surprises me!
