Hi again.
being a collector of nepalese Khukuri and having various army, police, village types, historic and an antique(RNA) on display the next one on the list wanted is one of many owned by king prithvi of which many are on show in the national museum of nepal.
This is the one i wanted of the exhibits shown.
browsing through the duplicates made by many makers, none seem to be an exact copy of which i was looking for with certain areas not reproduced as the original. although they were nice khukuris in themselves i was being a bit picky it seems for my purchase of.
if you take any passing fancy to "kukri's" then you may want to stop reading here and have a look yourselves at these copies to get a sense of my post, maybe!
ah, you're back, (rolls eyes!)
apart from the blade kaudi, khol etc not being to my liking, the handle itself posed the most problems for me. the dora(rings), harhari(the prominent ridge) were not exact but mainly the material used as the original is ivory/horn which was out of the equation as a purchase.
so i got round to asking a certain maker to have one made more or less to the original as best as they could. buffalo leg bone was tried as an alternative but could not get a piece that was solid enough apparently to work with so a "white" wood was used instead.
after some time the khukuri arrived and on opening the box, A PROBLEM!
the usual covering of protective oils whilst preparing to ship had seeped into the handle due to not wrapping/covering it first to prevent this and had spoilt the look. talk about being disappointed. after consulting with the maker and suggesting i sand down the handle was not the viable solution to me.
so do i go through the hassle of shipping it back for a refund or replacement and waiting another while for another, grrr. i actually lost interest for a few days after this let down. so what was my other option for resolving this issue with the handle, yes, here on the forum. asked for advice and got a couple of remedies to try.

a picture showing my issue:
now to the khukuri itself. with this being a "talking point" purchase, this one is also going into a display box with notes added for any interested guests to read about on this khukuri.
the khukuri and the handle now much, much better than before, yes!
placed in the display box with additional info
in situ. as with the other display for the RNA khukuri this will also have lighting installed.
apart from not being able to use the original material for the handle i am more than happy with the making of this historic "artifact" to have as a showpiece.
thanks for looking.
