a knife butt ?

Hi folks.
I am cleaning up an old knife for a buddy. He figures he got it in the early 60's. It says "Solingen Germany H95" on the knife and I believe it is spelled this way but not sure. This is a hunting style knife with about a 5 inch blade with what looks like a Bowie style blade.
Now the butt is aluminium with a nut in the center on a threaded tang. The handle is stacked leather. The butt is loose and I cannot loosen or tighten the nut on the tang.
How does one loosen that nut??? I have tried some penetrating oil but it will not move. I do not want to use any heat.
Sorry for being long winded but wanted to give the most info that I can.
Any help on this would be great.
Thanks
Regards
Tar :)

Generally, the tang that goes through the nut is peened. You may have to file/grind the end of the tang down a little.

Thank you Bill for the reply. I will look at the end a bit closer to see if the tang is peened and then try and figure how I am going to file or grind.
I do have some small files and the good old Dremel.
I will be extremely careful.

It's also a good idea to grind an old screwdriver to fit the nut, or to make a tool from flat stock that fits the nut well-to avoid stripping it.

Thanks Bill for the replies. I have been looking at the end trying to see what is wrong now that you mention about the peening. I have looked at it with a magnifying glass to get a real look and I still have not figured out what to do. I have an old screwdriver and going to see if I can grind out the middle and see if I can make that work. If the end of the tang is peened once I get the screwdriver made up, I still will not be able to move it. So I still will have to figure out a way to get the metal out of the way. Is my thinking along the right direction.
Thanks for all of the help
Regards
Tar :)
