One of my good friends, Bill has a sister that's going into the Navy as a chef and wants to buy her a knife before she leaves so he asked me, knowing I know a bit about knives. Here are the things he wants the knife to be.

-Under $100
-Solid construction if it ever needed to be hard used
-MUST have a reversible pocket clip, as she is left handed
-Bill thinks partially serrated may be useful, but I'm not sure if she needs it, I could probably convince him out of it; Tell me if you guys would recommend it.
-Low maintenance if possible
-rust resistant (She'll be working on a boat surrounded by saltwater)

I've been thinking maybe a Spyderco Police would fit the description, but even more than that I think the Cold Steel Recon Small spearpoint would be a great option. Feel free to suggest any folder that fits the description, thanks!

BM Grip/Mini-grip (I think the full might be a little over budget not sure)
Spyderco Manix2/XL
For a little more than $100($140ish, I think, if you do a little hunting) BM Adamas is probably as tough as a folding knife can get under $200.

At this point in her career, I'd stick with something small and personal like a mini-Grip or a Native 5 (slightly over $100). Hopefully, some recent Navy vets will drop by and give more direction, but it sounds like she hasn't been in the Navy long enough to know a lot about shipboard regs, which may be a big determining factor in what she can and can't carry. I've read other posts from more recent sailors who say that they are pretty restricted in what they can bring aboard ship.

An AXIS lock or a back lock will be lefty-friendly and easy to pocket in the Native or mini-G size range. Spyderco's Salt series has already been mentioned and would be a good choice as they are also back locks (IIRC) and are corrosion resistant throughout, not just the blade.
