A knife for the wife.

So today, my wife and I were almost attacked by a pitbull tonight while taking our own dogs for a walk. The dog had jumped it's fence and started chasing us. Luckily we were able to get away with just a scare. Sadly though this isn't the first time this has happened (there are several overly aggressive and poorly trained dogs in the neighborhood) and my wife finally told me that she wants to start carrying a knife of her own.

I offered to give her back the little auto that I gave her a while back, but she doesn't want that. Says she wants something bigger and deadlier. So I went through my collection and found a flimsy Chinese hunting knife that needs a sheath. The other knives I have are traditional folders and wouldn't be good if you needed it in an emergency.

Anywho, I've been looking at something suitable for her, that's not to terribly expensive. A fixed blade in the 20$ price range and a blade length between 4-6". I've come across a couple of potential boot knives that fit the bill, but i'm not sure if a double edged blade would be best since she has zero knife experience.

So any suggestions?

How about one of her older kitchen knives? You can have her carry it in a old purse?

She will know the grip and be use to it. Also I would suggest a big No, on the double edge. A old chef or boning knife will pierce or slash just fine if need be. Some Mace would be a good idea as well, Blast the dog in the face and if he still keeps coming she would have the knife.

The sad part is that it's the owner that should be blasted or run through for not training and keep their dog confined properly.

I would echo Schrade or a nice budget Kershaw...

And I know you are asking about a knife but how about something solid with some reach, a collapsible baton perhaps? Keeps it further away, which is good, and allows for prying, etc, if necessary. I have to use a cane in daily life so that'd be my first thing against an aggressive dog but, I do understand the desire for a knife too. Just throwing in something like a baton/stick for consideration... she can put a collapsible one in her bag/purse.

no knife for the wife; pepper spray bear strength would be better. With a knife you (or your wife in this case) have to be close and personal risking getting bit. A spray gives her distance. or a Tazer gun

Bites are ugly. Use a knife as a last resort. Personally, I'd get a can of bear spray or even personal mace and try to fog the dog over when it's still 20' away.

You or your wife also run the risk of stabbing your own dog, your partner, someone trying to help...it could get ugly fast, both injury wise and legal wise.

I'm not saying don't carry a knife, but I consider one more of a backup for that particular situation.

Also, a dog coming home covered in mace has a decent chance of transferring to the owner. You know what they say about payback.

How about the Cold Steel Tanto Lite?

It is a fixed blade of about 6" length, it is a tanto so strong enough for some decent stabbing, and it's very cheap.

Good suggestions everybody. I'll talk to her tomorrow about the bear mace and the collapsible baton. She might like the less than lethal approach.

I know a couple of dog owners that also carry pepper spray as a non-lethal deterrent for aggressive or attacking dogs. You could also look at something like a Mora 731 or 748. Those have a 6" blade, are under $20, and about as lightweight as you'll find for decent fixed blade knife that size. Or, the Mora 711 or 546 can be had for under $10, and they have a 4" blade, as well as a guard on the handle.

I would also recommend a walking stick! It will have a longer range/reach if the animal attacks you and you can get away without the danger of getting yourself bitten when trying to stab the dog. A stick will not draw unwanted attention also.

A knife?
You got to stick it in to the dog as it jumps on you in attack
Sorry but lets rule that out

Walking stick
An automatic opening walking umbrella, makes you visually disapear
Pepper spray
Bear spray

My wife carries a fixed blade on her water pack. I get many knives from the exchange and do a lot of multiple knife trades. I laid them all out and talked about each.... pro's / con's and let her pick. She looked passed the RAT 3-4 and 5- Didn't like the RPK San Mia II--No customs. She picked the Colt tactical with a cheap wanna be Kydex sheath. She is happy, so the rest of us are also....HAPPY!

I deal with dogs on a regular basis. I am a city mailman. I have been attacked, chased, harassed, you name it. A knife wouldn't be my 1st choice for defense from an aggressive pit or rot. I use Sabre as a last resort. Bear spray is EXPENSIVE and only comes in cans sizes I wouldn't want to carry all day, every day.
