A knife... I mean... nice weekend.

It turned out to be a good weekend for knife shopping. To kick-off the weekend I took Friday off and stopped by a local kitchen & knife shop.

If anyone lives near or visits Dutchess County NY, Warren Cutlery on Route 9, about a mile or two north of the Dutchess County Fairgrounds is a nice shop to visit. It should be easy to con … er I mean get your significant other to come along because it’s a very well stocked kitchen shop as well as having a large cutlery dept.

I got to handle many of the knives that I only see on the Internet. A very nice selection of Benchmade knives, I got to see the BM Rukus (a huge knife). They also had a large selection of French folders.

I was drawn to a folder that I had never heard of, a Grohmann Folding Beltknife. It was reduced to $88.00 and although I never heard of the brand, it was too unique to let go. I’m not usually into traditional folders but I really liked this one, so it came home with me.

Another knife that really looked good in person was the Lone Wolf Loveless Traditional folder. It was the drop point version, very impressive and definitely had a custom look. While researching the LW on the Internet, I found them to be a little more reasonable than the $200.00 shop’s price. Most of the prices were about 10 – 20% below MSRP, but some seemed to be at full price.

On Saturday I went to a local flea market and while sifting through the piles of Maxams and no names I came across a NIB Kershaw Storm II for $25. What a great knife, even at the regular price. I would recommend this knife to anyone wanting a decent knife without spending a lot.

Well I hope I didn’t put anyone to sleep….

I've wanted to hear more of the Grohman since I saw it first.

The fixed blade is a classic design, so I figured the folder would be practical.

How do you like it in use? Craftsmanship? Edge and edge retention?

I pretty much picked it because of its shape, it's a large sized folder with a solid nickel silver frame/ bolster. Some have compared it to an expensive Buck 110 and while I agree with that from a classic or iconic perspective it's really completely different.

The first thing I noticed is that it opens much easier than a Buck folder , the blade does not have much resistance on it. Some have said that their knife was dull out of the box, but mine was able to shave my forearm. It looks like it would make an excellent skinning/camp knife

It came with the lanyard and the leather sheath pictured.

Unfortunately I haven't used it yet so I don't know about edge retention and their web site is kind of cryptic regarding steel type. After reading about the company's history and the high regard this brand has in Canada , I'm glad I added it to my collection.

You got a decent price on it, too.
Good buy!

Thanks - the only down side is that after seeing the Lone Wolf Loveless folder, I want one of those too!
