A knife that will last me years and years :)

Hi everyone,

So I am in the market for an EDC/beater that will last me the next five or more years with moderate use.

My requirements are-
1. Be reasonably priced, under $150 would be great. I can't see myself spending more than that on something that may get lost or damaged.
2. Be durable- I tend to get really attached to my things, so I would be quite sad if I had to replace this in a year.
3. Be people friendly- In my country, we are not actually allowed to EDC a knife. But I just find it way too useful to go without one. I've had no problems pulling out my Emerson CQC7 before when it was needed, but I do think it might scare someone unintentionally.
4. Have a good line up on their other knives- As I do get attached to stuff, I tend to buy from the same manufacturer. Other knives with the same quality would be a good addition to my collection.

Just going from my criteria, I have narrowed it down to ONE manufactuer- Spyderco. Thinking mainly of their Sage 1 and Sage 2 knives. Also looking into the new Emerson hard use knives line if I can get it for closer to 150.

Any other brands you guys recommend I look into?

Cheers,

Tony

I don't have a great deal of experience with all the manufacturers discussed on this forum, but I've been happy with Spyderco, and I'm a big fan of my Sage 1.

with moderate use, most knives will last a lot longer than that, well, even with hard use :D
Spyderco has very good cutters, you can't go wrong there
Look into Benchmade also, love my 710
...others will come with more options,
Cheers

Two knives I switch back and fourth for EDC, both of which were under $150 each are the Spyderco Military and ZT 0200.....both should last many many years. I might give the edge to the Military only because the ZT is a pants destroyer. That machined G10 and clip of the ZT are gonna kill many pairs of pants over the years :D....

If you are concerned about people getting scared when you use your knife, the ZT200 and the Military are probably too aggressive. I think, based on your criteria, the Sage is a good choice. Myself, I like the Military a lot. With proper use, all will last a long time. Don't be surprised though if you buy another and another.

I might just go and pull the trigger on a CF Sage 1 then. I also like it since it is the least intimidating looking of the other choices I have in mind.

Odds are you won't be disappointed with the Sage1, it's just about edc knife perfection.

i'd have to go with the Manix 2, you can purchase on for $75.00 and it's made here in the US!!!!

Tough blade...great EDC

Spyderco Military. Their HT of S30V is great, the knife feels perfect in hand, very tough with the nested liners, and still light/simple.

Depending on what you need your knife to do on a daily basis, you can't go too far wrong with a SAK. Generally easier and more convenient to carry than a multi-tool with great functionality, people-friendly, affordable, easy to sharpen, etc...

But if you're looking for a larger folder, I'd say go with a Spyderco Delica 4 or the very classy Sage 1. Both are awesome for EDC and won't break the bank. I'd also recommend carrying a smaller blade to compliment the bigger folder, though. Spyderco's Kiwi 3 is an amazing little secondary knife and can be had for around $20.

Good luck!

maybe something like a mini griptilian, delica FFG or if you want better materials a paramilitary 2. All fairly lower cost edc class knives.

Perhaps a BM Griptilian, would be a great choice.

Or if you want something more "old-school" check out the Buck 110 oder 112 (if smaller is prefered).

Kind regards

I was looking for the same thing, and funny enough, also settled on spyderco. I went way cheap and got the frn ukpk. Non-threatening, not likely to be outlawed, great performance, easy maintenance, and very few parts to wear. I'm going to do a full review when I get around to it.

Cold Steel American Lawman. Can't say it's "threatening" after you've sanded that black coating off. And at around $60, it just screams "beater".

Spyderco Military. I own a number of other brands/models but that one keeps working itself back to the first choice to carry every day.

I think the Gayle Bradley might be right for you. It's very durable and well-made, but has a gentlemanly appearance. Also, the steel is fantastic, especially considering the price.

Fallkniven U2.

Small, Lightweight and Durable, High End Steel, Very People Friendly, Under $100

Or

Fallkniven U1, Same Great Steel, Steel Liners, Slip Joint - If Locking Blades are Frowned Upon. Not sure where these price out at.
