A knife with these characteristics??

Still trying to find my "perfect" EDC.

I know what I want in a knife, and that's embodied in the Mayo TNT. However, an 18 month backlog for a knife, perfect as it may be for what I'm looking for, is tough to swallow! :(

I like the profile, blade shape, oval hole opening, thin (oval) profile, negligable weight, and great materials of the TNT, and have been lusting after them for quite some time. I may eventually put myself on his list, or wait anxiously for one to come available.

In the meantime, what other knife shares the slim, rounded profile, smooth grips, finger choil, and drop/clip/spearpoint profile (3-3.5" blade out of D2/ATS-34/154 talonite/etc) and weighs next to nothing? The AG Russell one hand knife, lightweight, in rukarta looked great, except no clip. :( None of the Spyderco's float my boat, as the hole shape/size makes a nice protrusion on the side (though the upcoming paramilitary sounds interesting). If the BM 806 D2 axis were the mini size, it'd be great, and I'd round up the G10 a bit to make it a nicer shape.

What else am I missing folks? I've done a lot of searching, but I'm sure I'm missing something! Oh, and I haven't found an Anderson or Dobruski FOR SALE that meets this yet, though they're out there!

Regards and thanks in advance,
Cedric

Where do you live??
Make sure you go to a Custom knife show.It is an eye opening experience.IMO:)
Lots to see.

First of all I wonder why don't you just go for the TNT.
The second thing is, you really should try the Spyderco. Yes it looks like that the protrusion really will bother you, but I've proven myself wrong by getting the Endura and found that the thinner handle makes it practically invisible.

Nifrand - I live in Maryland now, but in less than a week, I'm moving to the San Antonio area. For non-customs, I can see just about anything, as the Knifecenter is not far away.

I haven't just gone for the TNT, because I really would like a good knife as a user, and I don't have 18 months to wait for a new knife. If it were going to sit on a shelf to admire, I wouldn't mind the wait.

There is a knife show coming up in a few weeks in Central Texas, and though I'm sure there'll be a lot of good knifemakers there, the ones who's work I've seen that I admire the most aren't on the list of anticipated atendees. Oh, and I'll still be in the middle of moving into the new house, taking exams, starting work, unpacking, and having our first Baby Boy!!! :) :) :)

Cedric

A large Classic Sebenza fits your parameters. You can still find them with BG42 wich is very similar to ATS-34/154CM just has an additional element to give it greater hardness. The S30V is a great steel so far in my large wood inlaid Classic. The Classic has a nice pointy blade shape and a finger choil/cutout that lets the Sebbie fit in your hand with no thought of forward movement. Frame lock is perfected on it. Weight is around 4.5oz. Best of all, available now.

A large Classic Sebenza fits your parameters.
Except maybe for the weight (I'd hardly call it insubstantial) and that the handles are flat, not oval like the TNT. Then again, I don't know how much a large TNT weighs either.

So what? I think you said this is going to be "a user". That being the case, you don't need to stick with knife makers you know. Have fun at the show, buy something that fits your criteria, and use it. Although I'm more into fixed blades than folders, all of my custom "users" are from relatively new or otherwise unknown knife makers. They've all proven to be excellent knives.

Support your local knife makers!

The wood inlaid models in both Classic profile and Regular profile give you more of a rounded grip. Again, AVAILABLE NOW! :D

If you like framelock knives I find the Darrel Raplh EDC to be a fine knife - wait time is reasonable too even though I have one on order and the wait is killing me...

Scott Cook has one-upped CRK with his Lochsa folder. I haven't handled one of these, but I don't think I need to, as I have 3 of his fixed blades and would buy one of these without handling (I don't say that for many makers). (The pic of the "Large Full Grip Ironwood" under "Owyhee" is my knife :D )

The small and large Sebenza's are still very nice quality knives, the handles just aren't as refined as they are on the Lochsa.

You're gonna have a tough time :) If I could get Tom to make me a TNT but with a BG-42 or S30V blade, I'd probably have my last EDC folder.

Joe

PS C'mon, you know what I mean by "last" -- I mean the last one I'll buy, before I buy the next one

It really is a tough search - the "grail" per se. I appreciate everyone's input so far. I've looked at the Lochsa folders (wow! pretty!), but the blade length is a touch long (looking at roughly 3-3.25") and I believe his wait time is increasing dramatically as we speak. :)

I'll have to see if I can go to the show in Austin at the end of July, and see what's available.

I've considered the small sebbie, but you're right, I was looking for a more oval shape to the frame, though it's not bad. As far as other "production" folders, I haven't had the best of luck in my searches. Thus why I posted the topic.

Thanks again everyone, and input is ALWAYS welcome!

C.

I have a medium one with the frame lock. There have been a few for sale lately (3"-3.5"). Very classy. 420-V on mine is razor sharp. Personally, I've gone back and forth and found the "grail" didn't exist. I have a Sebenza and the EDC. They both have their merits.

I know you said you did'nt care for the Spyderco knives, but maybe you would like to reconsider the Native?
Unlike most Spydercos the hole does'nt cause the blade to have that distinctive "hump" in the blade. Besides I can't see how the hole is more of a protrusion than a thumb-stud or disk.

Good luck,
Allen.

Cedric, you don't have email enabled ... drop me a line I may know of something that will suit your needs. 92

You know, I looked hard at the Spydercos, and perhaps the up and coming Paramilitary might fit my needs. The native, though it felt great in the hand, was quite wide, and took up a LOT of space width wise in my front/back pocket. I guess I need something a bit more streamlined.

Thanks for the thoughts though!!

I've rarely met a group of folks so willing to help out another Knut.
:)

Cedric
