I went for a short wonder day before yesterday. I wanted to check out one of my favorite area to shelter from the wind and have lunch sometimes in the Autumn and Winter.

It's at a rock formation in a small hollow where I can make a small fire and meditate in piece.

I like the peaceful energy in this place as well as the view when I look around the hollow.

Still a good bit of fungi around, but the temps are finally cooling off.

There is a lot of wildlife in the area.

I think I also found some more Basswood.

Everyone know what kind of berries these are? A hint...you do not eat them.

A couple more hints...

Since i had it with me anyway I thought I'd snap a couple of cool shots of the new machete....

What I didn't realize was just how hard this old dead wood was...I'm not sure what it is but I think I want some to make something out of. It was so hard my tomahawk just bounced off of it, and in that last pic of the machete I had stuck it in a knot about hard as glass and wrinkled the edge on the machete. But you have to take into account that this wood was extremely hard and the edge on this machete was thinner than it was supposed to be. The damage was minimal, and easily fixed for the most part using the spine of my knife. When I realized just how hard the wood was I was impressed the damage was so small.

Andy of course offered to fix it for me but luckily I have access to a few belt grinders so I wanted to give re-profiling the blade a go. I took it down to a flat on the edge about 0.035 and then put a secondary bevel on it that I will convex. So far I have only cleaned the wire edge up but it is doing pretty well so far.

I haven't tried that wood out again...and probably won't but I have attacked more seasoned Poplar and it still handles that like a champ. In more ways than one this is the grail machete for me...I keep finding myself looking for things to use it on, and i can't wait to get the sheath made up.

Great pics and of course Andys blades rock. I'm looking forward to summer being over so I can hike in sub 100 degree weather!

Looks like a really great spot to get away to bro - that machete is the bee's knees !

I've swung a knife into some hard wood before and rolled my edge. I hate it when that happens.. but at least you can get the damage cleared up pretty easily.

Only a few weeks to deer season!

Let me first say that Tn has absolutely the most beautiful, and idealic wilderness areas I've ever spent time in.

I'd expect seasoned hardwood knots to do damage to most machetes. The one I sent you, as you know, was a dud because I dropped the blade against the belt, and totaly miffed the grind. Its got a much thinner grind than most.

Some of those rock formations look like they're begging to be shelter...

Man that machete is so awesome. Don't know if I can justify the expense though. I don't really NEED it. I just think it would be the best all around chopper to include zombies.:D

Nice shots Mist. I was down your way a couple of weeks ago, like the rest, MY season is on its way. Some like spring and summer, me? I like fall and winter. Cya on the trails. Moose

Cool spot, bro. Reminds me of one of my favs down here at Greenleaf state park. I'm ready for cooler weather for me and the boy to get back out. The heat is bad enough without finding yourself wearing tick pants on the way out. Lol. Machete is sweet, too by the way. Great job Andy.

Mist,

I don't often post in these, I just lurk and enjoy them.

But, this spot of yours really resonates with me.

I am still getting my legs under me, here at the ranch, but I think Monday or Tuesday, I am going to take a ride across, and find a good place to sit a spell, and watch rocks grow.

Best,
Marion

Thanks, and yes they do!

The temps have started dropping now, at least I could comfortably picture myself sitting there by a fire :)

Lots of little grottos around here to hide in.

Yep, it's reeeeaally sweet

That was what was so cool, even as hard as it was it didn't do that much harm. The seasoned poplar I have been working with is pretty hard and the have been no effects at all. My hawk with a thicker grind wouldn't even bite into that hard wood and I'm sure that knot would have chipped some of my other knives.

Looks like a nice place just to relax a let go of things.

Very much so.

your own little slice of heaven an't it!!!!!!

Yep, one of them :)

Yep, beautiful here. You need to come up later for a hike or maybe an over-niter out around Edwards Point.

Oh yeah, after further study I was not surprised at all. I knew it was thin when I got it, even so it handled that Poplar really well with no ill effects at all. Since I thickened the edge just a little I feel better about it and it is definitely my grail machete, thanks for that Bro.

I know, I know of more than once they have formed the back wall of my sheter.

Mist - what is the blade length on this?

Andy - great job on both the knife and the machete.

Actual length is 11.5 tip to handle.

Yes he he did a damn fine job on both!

Looks great. Im going to have to get up there sometime

Yeah you should come up and check it out. I'm wanting to get back down on the Chattahoochee to check out some old haunts.

Being as it ended a long search for the right machete for me, I could easily justify it now, hell I got so lucky on him miffing this one it ain't funny

Thanks man, and I am SOOOOO looking forward to cooler days Autumn and Winter are definitely my favorite seasons.

Won't be long now man, it's almost here

I'm really looking forward to getting Alayna out a lot more in the Fall.

Thanks bro, you should do that. It is really good for the inner spirit sometimes.

Mist - thanks for the update. I'm am really interested in the 12" machete. Savings some more nickels right now for one......

Great photos man!!

Thanks man, glad you enjoyed it.

I think you'll be happy with it. For me it is the grail machete design works perfect for my uses. Hell I'd love to have the same exact design in slightly (barely) thicker 5160 or something similar and a bit harder...but I couldn't afford that right now. I may have gotten a great deal on this one being a defect but I am seriously considering another one later that isn't. Having used this one a bit and loving it so much I can totally justify the cost in my head...I just have a couple of other knives I want from him first :)
