I have really grown a fondness for the leuku design and am considering purchasing one but I want something I can use. No frills heavy duty knife that could handle a lot of fire and shelter craft. I'm pretty set on the leuku design and like the idea of a thicker blade but It's not mandatory. 6-8" long is best too. Any ideas of on where I could get something like this in the US without spending over $150? That would be great if possible.

Thanks

Jake

Strömeng makes nice leukus, most of them can be had for less than $150. The blades aren't super thick.

Roselli offers 5" and 7" leukus (blade thickness is about 5mm).

Ahti has two models with 5 1/2" and 7" blades (thicker than Strömengs but thinned than Rosellis), I like the handles on them very much. Sheaths are nice as well. They go for $100 or so.

Woods Jewels is also worth a look they've got a leuku (8") and pukko combo for around $130. Not a very well known brand, but I've been using two of their pukkos for a few years and I'm very happy with them, although the blades needed a bit of sharpening when I received them.

I looked those up. The stromengs looked great but I couldn't find them for less than about $160 USD. The Rosellies look pretty simple but nice overall (might be what I end up with). The Ahti 180mm looks good, only concern is the handle is a little odd but I love the price. The woods Jewels look rather decorative to me and the Leuku seems exceedingly narrow for what it is. Thanks for the help.

Take a look at what Kellam has to offer. I believe many of his models are made by Ahti.

I left you a visitor message on your profile with some info on where to get Strömengs at a good price.

I got onto leukus for outdoor carry when I was in high school and it's still my favorite design for bush/survival. Check out J. Martinni Knives and Ragnars also.

There are a lot of good leukus out there. Just start Googling the Nordic and Scandinavian makers and follow links from there. Most are available in the U.S. or have distribution here. A lot of private makers have leukus as well.

You probably know they are often combined with a shorter blade puukko in sets. I think the coolest is a set in a single sheath by a good custom leather builder. Hope you let us know what you get.
