1. Cherry Laurel (Prunus caroliniana laurocerasusis) dead and seasoned on the tree is a hard wood.
2. The Skinny ASH-1 has never seen a stone or strop, factory edge all the way.
3. ASH-1 went through 2" English Ivy (woody, fibrous) vines, attached to trees in a few whacks.
4. Stropped ASH-1 on 400, 600 and green compound strop and went back to finish off Cherry Laurel branch chopping. Chips flying everywhere.
5. ASH-1 batonned through hard Cherry Laurel limb (3-1/2") easily, but not swiftly.
6. It is full of checks and cracks making is useless as a wood for carving a spoon.
7. Go find White Oak log to slab off a suitable whittling piece.

Busses won't get much work on the spoon whittling project after roughing it out but all of the other chores I put the Skinny ASH-1 through it performed admirably. Here are a few late afternoon shots.

Relaxin' by the pond.

And all this time I've been thinking that Cherry Laurel was Prunus georgiana laurocerasusis:p

Thanks for the review and pics:thumbup:

OK,ok! No latin fans in here. So, I grabbed a piece of firewood, not White Oak (Quercus..oh never mind) but oak.

Used the Cherry Laurel baton to split it.

Got a good pile of firewood.

Picked out the piece with the spoon inside.

Roughed it out with the Skinny ASH-1.
Yes, I'm out of work and bored with the search after 4 months.
So I can make a living whittling spoons...as long as I can get $300 apiece for them!
Spoons anyone!

I know that you have all been asking, 'What ever happened to the Busse spoon?' So Here is an update. With the help of a $10 Rough Rider whittler, a Boker Arbollito Barlow and AG Russell's yellow bone Barlow I've pretty much finished the whittling on the Busse spoon. Maybe some sanding and oiling and it will be done. This is white oak and it is not the easiest whittling wood around but the spoon should last a long time. I also know why most wooden spoons are so shallow, this deeper bowl was a bear with just a knife. Next update when it's finished.
