My brother and I took our ESEEs out in the back yard to practice building fire and boiling water... So we bought a couple of those dehyrdated camp meals and went to town...

Don't bother. They're marginally edible, but terrifically expensive. You're much better served just going down to your local asian market and browsing the saimin and curry section. WAY cheaper and better tasting.

As for backyard cooking.... My GF (now wife) challenged her students to try and eat %100 locovore for one weekend. We had plenty of local produce, but no meat. So, as I came home from work I contemplated what I was going to cook with our local veggies, home grown spices, and local salt. (%100 means %100) I let the dogs out into the back yard and Vyvyan plunges into the bushes emerging with a feral chicken in his mouth. MEAT!! I snatched it from him, skinned it, and roasted that bugger up with rosemary and papaya seeds. Okinawan sweet potato, tomatoes and ong choy rounded out the meal. Nummers.

Cookin' from the back yard :D

I actually like the Freeze dried stuff. It taste pretty good for what it is, and even better on the trails when you are away from everything.

But I have to 10000% agree that they are very expensive.

Yeah, We had Kung Pow Rice and Chilli Mac with Beef... Both tasted pretty good considering they were freeze dried...

The experiment was to build fire and boil water... For the Fire we only used nature materials and of course a firesteel.
