Help me with my ignorance, please. Can someone tell me what the differences are amongst the various Howling Rats? I'm purchasing a 2nd generation HR; how is that different from the other generations? And what can you tell me about a HR LM? I've seen a post about it elsewhere but can't find any info.

Love the forum and will be upgrading my membership soon. And I will post pics when I get my HR . . .

I believe the main difference is the Res-C handle and a larger choil than the first gen and the HRLM.

The only difference between the 1st gen HR and the 2nd gen HR is the size of the choil, with the 2nd gen choil being larger. Both of these have Res-C handles.

An HRLM has a very small choil, but moves away from the Res-C handles and has micarta handles. There are handle/coating variations here--I know other than the standard blk/blk, there was also muddy.

Of the Res-C handled HRs, there are blade configuration variations out there. One was a Howling FAT, thicker than either the 1st or 2nd gen HRs. There was one with a bandbreaker ground along the spine, and a Ridgeback or Razorback version with serrations along a portion of the spine. The was also one that was all brown--the Res-C handle and the coating were brown.

And all of this before you even get into grinds, which have been known to vary somewhat amongst some of the models. If I have forgotten anything, I am sure that someone else will chime in here.

My sterile Gen 2 has a saber grind. I know some HR's had a full flat grind.

Pretty much all the HR pedigree is in this link.

I have a document on my home computer with info on ALL the Generations, variants and permutations released from the shop. With all the color combos, serration numbers, sterile or logo etc. there are over 25 different HRs if want a full collection.

I prefer the Gen 1 and the HRLM. The choil on the Gen 2 is WAY too big IMO. More of a hinderance than a benefit.

Get a Gen1 or HRLM and you will be good to go.

Mike,
That is some great info in that thread you linked to. I forgot all about some of those, thanks for the info.

:D:D

Man... I forgot about that one. There was a lot of stuff there.

Thanks , Mike, that was a lot of help. If only some of those beauties were for sale . . . :)

It is a good one, but I wish I could find my HR Pedigree list that I put together. It has info on every HR that was ever released from the shop. I think it's on my home computer. When I find it I will post it here. There may be one or two missing, but it's damn near complete. Covers each Generation, colors, grinds, variants, Ridgeback serration numbers, sterile vs. logo'd, etc. Took me awhile. And I know the owner/location of most of them. If I had the cash I would try to get one of each. Quite a project. Someday:thumbup:;)
