A little backyard messing around

After a day of mowing and messing around in my new man cave, I decided to play with two knives: JK Rule #9 and Fiddleback Kephart. This is not a bashing of either since both knives are great and the makers are awesome people. It's a comparison in that I think the knives are similar. That's it. About me- I'm a little bit of a bushcrafter, more of a newbie. I hike and camp more than create stuff. I like both knives and my way of camping is more smoothing than roughing it. This is a quick review of scraping with the spine, carving a few curls (which I suck at, btw), a couple side by side pics, and my description of stabbing the knives into the stick I used and pushing laterally as well as torquing each knife.
Sheathes are kydex/plastic and functional. Both knives are shaving sharp, tested on the hair on my leg.

I think the JK scrapes with the spine better and because I've had it longer, I did a bit better with it making curls. I love the look of both and the Fiddleback is freakin' gorgeous. These knives both get a lot of play time, especially with food prep. I'll update the thread as time goes on.

Nice compare.

I love my JK's (more coming) and my Fiddlebacks (more coming) and they are both excellent examples of very well made knives from well respected makers. FWIW I have the same exact Kephart with Flame Box Elder and it may be in the top favorite Fiddlebacks, save the Flame Box Elder Scandi Handyman. My Element 01 JK and Stretched Muk w/fork carving set are tied for favorite JK's. Waiting on a limited release from JK that I may compare to my Runts from Fiddleback and Itty Bitty from Fleming. I need to get outside and use them, but 95+ for the last couple months has had me seeking more AC than anything else.

I picked up my Hikers' Backup over the weekend and it is really sweet. I will have to see how it stacks up against the Runt also.

Great comparison. I love the look of both of them although I must admit to being slightly biased. ;)

^^This^^ and IMHO the Rule#9 is one of the best looking knives I have seen (and owned).

JK handle looks like it would fit my hand better, have to be impressed with the others styling but the JK has a classic look that I always prefer though.

thanks for the pictures, looks like a fun afternoon.

I like the look of the Fiddleback knives and they sure seem to sell a lot of them!

My JK / Protourist Rule # 9 is an awesome knife, and I had mine customized to fit my preference.

A curly making thread might be a good one - let me get more practice with that and then we can think about it -

Here is a great video by Mors Kochansky on making feather sticks -

Mors is a knowledgeable guy. I just need to spend less time drooling over knives and more time using the ones I have.

Nice comparison and photos. I know John makes a great knife but I have never owned a fiddleback. I think they are made right up the road from me. Both look great!

mqqn,

Great video! Thanks for posting.
