A little Christmas guilt

So, I was out Christmas shopping and I ended up at Lowe's. As I was walking around, I spot some Case knives! I tried to resist their pull and walk past them, but to no avail. I picked one up and then put it down, telling myself I was out shopping to buy gifts for other people. I walked away for a couple minutes but came back around and started looking at screwdrivers. The screwdrivers were "mysteriously" right next to the knives. After a minute or two of pretending to look at screwdrivers while glancing at the knives, I walked outta there with a Case Sodbuster Jr.

My excitement about the knife is tempered with a little guilt. Its the second present (read: knife) I got myself while shopping for others. I think I'm just looking for a little safety in numbers. Am I the only one with this problem?

Congrats and my condolences.

I picked up a Sodbuster Jr at my local Lowes when it opened a couple years ago. Since then I stop by the end cap where the knives are only to find some Appalachian Trail stuff with the shields on upside-down.

I suppose it's for the best. I can't imagine the trouble I'd be in if they had a full selection of Case, Buck or other quality makers knives.

Stag peanut......I think lowes does it on purpose. I shop there for work all the time they never had any stag Case before I went Christmas shopping. They didn't even have the double two way twisty screwdriver thingy my little brother asked for LOL You are NOT alone!!

I'm a partner on the guilt trip Curtis. I don't believe there is anything wrong with treating myself to something while shopping for others, but I do feel guilty in a way. I like to think of it as having a healthy conscience.

At least you have to go to the hardware store to falter. I only need to log into BF...

Don't feel bad, it is nothing to be ashamed of, IMO.

Now, if you want Christmas guilt, I just finished making my Grandpa's SAK (Cap lifter, can opener, Phillips, Magnifying glass, large & small pen blades, an awl and a corkscrew...) and was almost tempted to keep the darn thing, hehe. Luckily, I found more spare parts in my box so I can make a duplicate :p

Besides, it is a tool that you can use everyday. Most people get junk that they use once and let it collect dust!!!

You're not buying a knife for yourself, you're supporting American workers!

It´s not just you ... I made the same this year... But I think it´s nothing wrong buying a knife for your own (The More The Better)... :p

At least when you buy presents for yourself you don't have to wrap them up! I've got a whole spare bedroom full of presents and some time over the next couple of days I'm going to have to wrap them, which I'm really not looking forward to! :(

J.B. nailed it C.L., the savings on the wrapping paper alone justify the buy!
Merry Christmas.

You only have to buy it once. You made a good choice and I hope you enjoy it.

My turn.... My name is Jeff, and I have an addiction. Anything wearing bone, stag, wood or any other attractive covers over a sharp carbon steel blade. Well, I don't drink, smoke or run around on my wife. See, I can justify anything.

Maybe you just like knives a lot J Buck. Addiction is unhealthy. Buying something that gives you pleasure and is with you everyday is a healthy habit.

Just the other day, I had to force myself to leave the Home Depot before I had finished picking up supplies, lest I were to fall victim to the same. :)

I'd love to see the surveillance video on this :)

lol That's nothing. I was doing the same thing at Target in the girl's toy section. I felt a bit weird looking at toys for little girls. So, I pretended to be looking at something else, until the aisle cleared a little. Then, I went in and snagged the dolls. I was buying them for my nieces, I swear!

Oh no! Don't tell me. I'm going out again today, I hope I don't end up at Home Depot looking at "screwdrivers".:D

That's the right attitude J Buck. I happen to drink and run around a lot. It costs me a bit though.

It'll cost you more than you think. Your posts seem to call out for acceptance but I want to offer another perspective. Too much focus on selfish pleasure feels right and justifiable at times but it almost never seems to leave you actually better off. Just a thought. I've been there and it wasn't worth it. Some learn by seeing the light or being burned by the heat. I had to be burned.
And OP, I ended up with a Manix 2 DLC, S30V and a fair share of guilt. But a great knife!

I told myself I would treat myself to a Case Lannys Clip. That turned into a well known and appreciated Terzuola/Spyderco design becoming part of that order. Which turned into another one handed wonder at a local knife show. Which turned into an order for the new Tom Sawyer barlows (best ones I've ever seen). I'm looking at placing an order with a buddy for a design I've wanted for a long time, and getting a Great Eastern 74 saddle trapper (still kicking myself for not getting a BF 2012 knife), all the while finishing up Christmas shopping, and looking at keeping my Silverado fed.

BTW, now, I have three places I have to check for Case knives right near home. Home Depot, the local Ace hardware store across the street, and Tractor Supply Company, nestled back with Home Depot. It's hard enough to stay out of all three, now Home Depot has Case knives! Man, I better just hand my wallet over now.
