I really like the congress pattern. so much so that I want one, that I am having a hard time finding within my parameters. This is only one problem. everytime i get involved in a search, I remember that I've never found one that made me happy. I don't like the swayback, or blades sticking up too much, The sheepsfoot blades are too short for some of the things I need a knife for, etc. Should I just let it go, and stay with stockmans, which I already love, or look at another pattern, like the whittler (the bowtie whittlers drive me crazy-the queen carpenter's whittler has got to be one of the most beautiful patterns ever). Any Advice?

It really sounds like you don't like Congress patterns:D The only ones I've ever seen that didn't have the blades sticking up a lot were sway backs.

By bowtie, I assume you mean a swell center whittler. They are indeed great looking knives. And that Queen carpenter's whittler makes a nice variation with the sheepfoot blade. I carried a few Case and Queen swell centers for years. They feel nice in the pocket, and in the hand. If you like to carve, the small blades are quite useful as well as the big one. Now that I have a little arthritis, I need a bigger handled knife, so I carry a scagel repro.

Here is one from Cumberland (last one?). It's a Case...not too much swayback, 4 different blades, and with the easy open cutouts, maybe the blades nest a bit lower than most. Don't know for sure... ...you could call and ask maybe.
Not affiliated, just offering up an option for you.

I'm not a big Congress guy, but Boker makes an interesting one in carbon steel and Queen makes a nifty two-blader in D2 steel.

I have the queen 2 blade congress in D-2, and it is a great knife. I had to reprofile the edges, but I carried it for two months, and cut a lot of different things with it (mostly cardboard and rope) and only needed to touch the edges up on the corners of the white sharpmaker rods.

Ever tried the "swayback"? Or used sheepsfoot blades much? The knife is not really a slicer, its an excellent trimmer, scorer, and whittler. The swayback handle is particularly adapted to draw cuts toward you: carefully controlled deep or hard cuts. A long sheepsfoot is sort of like a screen door on a submarine, there really isn't much point to it, although all sheepsfoot(feet) have nice points :D.

Well, I may have found the Congress for me to pull the trigger on. Bulldog (on their own website) has a medium 3 5/8 rounded bolster in white smooth bone for 30 bucks. The only thing I don't like about it is the etching; it is some pitbull crap. But, here it is

You'll be happy with that one. Great steel and good fit and finish. I've had a couple with a few rough spots, but I've yet to get one with a weak spring or wobbly blades. Great users.

Good Luck.

Wheres the bulldog site? Ahh, never mind, I found it. The US distributor. I was thinking of the Olbertz site, which does not sell.
