A little easy test for your folder

Hello,

just a little idea we have played with Fred.
It's simple but not every knives has passed that test with fying colors but the Sebenza...

Just cut the transparent bottom of a plastic bottle (mineral water, coke, pepsi...)
It sounds easy but...
Plastic can be hard at the center of the bottle butt especially for plain edges.

The little Sebenza went through and its blade was quite hot after...

Cheers,

JM

Nemo,
That is a good test medium for a folder as plastic used in bottles is some seriously tough material.
Be careful that you don't use a folder meant for light duty type cutting or it could end up being a painful test.
I'm gonna test some of my folders with this now. It just didn't occur to me to try plastic. You know I'm an avowed manila rope butcher!

BTW It was good to hear from you!

That's my main test.

Almost anthing will cut cloth/jeans or wet paper.

I test on a 2 1/2 gallon mountain spring plastic water container.

Some blades pierce, some bind like hollow grinds (the material is friction prone). Some slash and some dance off. A wharncliff slashes very well, a recurve does not.

I think it's as good a test as any for cutting, but not toughness which is another story. But toughness is not my main concern, cutting, slashing, piercing is.

Yeah I'm crazy, but what do you want me to do about it

Maybe I will break in my Sebenza this way. I know I have to try it with my Military.

My little Sebenza is the king for that exercise.
I make it three times by day as I am conditionning the bottle before to trash tehm.

Now a serrated Military could do it perharps quicker...

I've been using my micra and a Ladybug to make dog water bowls out of plastic water bottles for a couple of years now. I only need them when I'm away from the house and those two knives are on the keyring for my truck.

Franck,

The plastic on the side of the bottle is really easy to cut or reap with the teeth.
I was talking about the butt/bottom of the bottle.

cheers,
JM

What knives don't easily cut the bottoms out of the plastic soda/water bottles ? The sheepfoot blade on my Old Timer easily cut the bottom out and I could still shave the hair on my arm afterwords. I only had one bottle so I couldn't try anymore, but I'll guess my Opinel would cut just well, though maybe not due to the wider blade. Although it wouldn't be as easy to handle even a $6 Imperial folder that I wanted to play with, a fishing knive with the hook remover and a long clip blade, should do fine as the thin carbon steel blade also easily gets shaving sharp. It's pretty lightly constructed though, in spite of the nicely polished blades, so one would need to proceed with caution. The sheepfoot blade on the stockman is probably ideal for such tasks as it's short and easily controlled, the tip starts the cut easily into such materials with a minimum of worry about folding the blade on one's fingers, and it's usually sharp.

Johno,

I believe the idea is to cut across the Bottom of the Bottle through the Center where the plastic is thickest.

Yes, it's much, much harder to cut across the center, thru the sprue. To get a bit more leverage I had to use a glove with my Old Timer, a slim stockman, but I did cut thru. It was only scraping sharp when done but a few swipes on a hard stone and on leather and it was back to normal. The thickness at the sprue was between 0.19 and 0.20 inches. I won't try it with the Imperial, it's kind of flimsy, but an Opinel should do ok.

What other knives didn't do it ?

Sifu #1 just pushed it's way through. There are probably different thicknesses for different type of bottles...a 32oz Snapple bottle was a BEAR, and the plastic kept "cracking" versus a Mountain Dew 1liter...the Snapple plastic is clearly harder.
