Mrs Pit is always impressed at how easy I can get Fat-wood;)

However what if something happened, old age etc and suddenly I could no longer get any, then what ?

Over here in the PNW other the in the height of Summer everything is soaked through and without expending a great deal of effort you are gonna struggle getting fire.
For this reason I carry a small amount of PJB at all times in a small waterproof capsule.

It's suprising how little you actually need to get a fire going, I'm sure there is anough for maybe 4 or 5 fires in my little capsule.....

Add small and add slowly is my fire making tip !

Wonderful pictures as always Pitt. True that ounce of prevention usually pays off.

Pit... If you can find kindling to light with PJB's how is it you cant find dry tinder? I mean you are one step away in the way of processing. Drag your blade at a 90 to one of those stems or sticks and voila... even a bald monkey could do it. Not trying to mock you... well okay... just a bit though.

I never said I can't do it Rick, I have done so many times but never without more effort than is required using PJB's or Fatwood.Same with Cedar bark etc, it might take me 10-15 strikes of the ferro rod where it will likely take 1 or 2 with Fatwood or PJB's.

I'm just giving you a hard time Pit... Not many folks realize that in extremely damp areas, even if it is not raining, any dry tinder you manage to find/make will be immediately start wicking moisture out of the air. What comes out of your pocket dry as a bone, can become damp to the touch within minutes. Nice post.

Yeah I know ya just yankin my chain Rick. The point I wanted to make is that while it's all fine and dandy playing around when the weather is mild, in serious winter conditions you want to do whatever it takes to make fire in the shortest amount of time. I've been in a situation where my fingers had lost so much feeling that I couldn't strike a match or use a Bic....it's amazing just how fast this happens !

I remember the thread when you were huddled under a fallen tree/debris windbreak by the shore. You had a hard time with fire that day and felt urgency for a FIRE NOW system. I felt for ya buddy... been there. Unless I am mistaken and it wasn't your thread.
