I was curious if it's possible to make ordinary cork (from bottles) even more resistant to water and fish teeth (I make some godawful, hideously ugly fishing lures in my spare time). So, what I did I soaked several cork stoppers in a jar with some boiled linseed oil. No vacuum, no heating, nothing like that, just time. Did this for a couple of days and then let hang dry for couple of weeks. They seem slick to the touch and slightly tacky.
For the upcoming 2nd batch of corks, I added some mineral spirits to the oil, roughly 50-50 by volume. I assume this is not gonna explode, catch fire, or anything of the sort? I read on this very forum that someone was messing around with some styrofoam and acetone, and the comments discouraging said activity were quite sobering. On that note, would it be safe to add (spray in) some white oil-based Rustoleum paint into the mix, to serve as a marker, to see more clearly how much penetration occurred?
Any other suggestions, other than Minwax wood hardener? Btw, does anyone here make their own hardener? If I remember correctly, that is roughly acetone, methanol, and possibly some acrylic plastic? But then again, not too keen on experimenting blindly.
Thanks
