Lately I have become obsessed with leather working and have been practicing a lot of carving, tooling and coloring. I have so much more respect for leather workers now (not that I didn't have the highest of respect before :)).

Like making knives, I have become addicted to the craft. Here are some projects I have completed recently...

And some leather trading cards I have been making. These have been great practice.

Thanks for taking a look!

Nicely Done, Steven. I see you have had some good, and useful help from Mr. Stohlman via Tech Tips. That book is a wealth of information for anyone wanting to carve leather. Your are laying down your colors very precisely and that is a VERY good thing. It's also not the easiest thing in the world to accomplish.

Keep at it, your last name will carry your far!;):D

Paul Long, Steve Long, both from Texas, both good with leather...any relation?

Thanks, Paul! That color sure is tricky. I'm working on one with a lot of shading and can't quite figure it out yet. Made a few practice pieces to learn a bit before trying it on the piece I'm working on. Tons of fun!

Haha! People in the leather world have told me that before ;). Kind of fitting since I have learned most of my sheath making skills from your videos :).

Thank you so much, Gene! It's great reading that since I have only been doing this for the past few months. It's hard to judge your own work after staring at it for so long :).

Very very nice. I really dig..., well, all of it.

Any coloring tips you'd like to share will not fall on deaf ears.

Thanks!
I am doing some more experimenting tonight and will get back with you about any tips I figure out. Slow and steady, quality brushes, layering the colors but waiting until the previous coat dries, and Tandy sells a great book about coloring. Will get the name of it for you once I get home. Has some great tips in it.
