A Little Gem

Once in a while (not very often) I peruse the bay for vintage knives. I'm a CASE boy born and raised

I always search "CASE knives 1970" to see what knives are available that week. I have no reason other than it was the year I bought my very first knife with money I earned. Just by the way, I was born in 1962. I've posted pictures here before of the knife I first bought, a CASE 62087 Jack---still have it to this day---my most prized knife period.

Anyway's while searching I came across this CASE #6244 Jack---it had a low starting bid price so I thought "what the heck". I play a little game with myself on that site, I put in a bid in for what I'm willing to pay and then don't check back until the auction is over. If I win---cool, if not---no harm, no foul ;)

Needless to say I won this little gem. Forgot about it after paying and was reminded of it when it showed up today. Solid full blades---no play at all and most important to me, gorgeous red bone :thumbup::thumbup:

It was a described---well used, stored improperly but recently cleaned---black peppers throughout on spine and blades.

Whats really neat to me is there an inscription on the back of the main blade "L A J 1970" oh how my mind raced---was this a gift to a young boy? first knife perhaps? A trinket of a companies appreciation to a loyal employee? One could imagine all the possibilities. Needless to say I really like this small Jack

I sharpened the blades (razor sharp) and it rides in the watch pocket now. I had to take sun lit pictures to really show off the bone. I also tried to capture part of the inscription---it's hard to see with the naked eye.

Well, here she is...TAH DAH!!!

That is a sweet find, Paul! I love the old red bone Case knives. A real beauty. Thanks for sharing

Nice score Paul, I always love seeing those nicely worn scales on your 62087 also, I know what I'm carrying tomorrow (-:

Wow, Paul-- what a great "surprise." :D

I'm happy for you.

(Are you on a roll, or what?! :))

Very nice, Paul! A real classic Redbone Case Jack!!
Case gets short shrift on the forums here. I love them, and really enjoy them when they come home to our flock!
Enjoy it in good health and spirits!!

Real nice Paul. That old Case redbone is one of my favorites.

Yep! Thats a dandy! I love my old Cases.

Charlie, I think the newer Cases get short shrift and most of the time rightly so, but the older (and I dont mean really old hyper-spendy Case Tested vintage) knives are solid as a rock and very well proportioned. I even have some '80s case knives that are great examples and made very well.

Thank you everyone for your nice comments. I really like this Jack and admire the bone a lot.

Paul

I really think that the new Case knives are a great bargain. They have a great assortment of patterns, the steel is quite usable, and I have always found the fit and finish is comparable to other production knives.

Case knives of that era were just spectacular: the red bone, the patterns, the proportions. Really unmatched today.

Very nice! Why can't they do bone like that anymore?

As per an exchange in another thread:
And finally, here's a pic of the Rust Red variations. The previous batch rep is in the middle. The two outside ones (new spears) were dyed longer, without an "overcoat".

We were looking for a deeper red, but dye doesn't always do what is expected. Still nice though. We need to pull out the "Wayback" machine, and go spy on Case in the 40s and 50s!:D

Charlie, nowadays you'd be hard pressed to match one of the older dye colors, those rich shades were the result of a lot of "...enes" that were added to enhance absorption and color amongst other things, and which are no longer allowed in dyes due to their nasty ingredients.

Those knives are just stunning amigo!!! I don't see anything wrong with that color at all!

Eric

I appreciate insights such as these-- I had no idea.
