A little help for an Army buddy in Iraq

A young man from my church is now deployed in Iraq, he signed up after 9/11. Army 82nd Airborne somewhere near Bagdad. I am putting together a care package for him and his companions. Diamond wipes, sunscreen, eye drops, chapstick, mouth wash, hard candy, fingernail clippers, etc. I want to send him a CU-7, but will he be allowed to carry it? I have heard some C/O's are very particular about knives. Is this crap or not?
I will also be selling some personal knives to help pay for this care package. Too old to go and fight so I might as well help the men that are.
Any other recommendations appreciated on items to send. I will be sending one large shipment to begin with then smaller shipments every other month, kind of adopting his unit.

carpediem,

Don't see your location but if you go to an Army Post the local Post Office may ship it for free. In regards to the knife is the decision of the Chain of Command, but the larger the knife the more difficult for the COC to accept the knife. Other items you may consider are, newspapers and magazines (pornographic material is not allowed), sunscreen, powder drinks, baby wipes, cookies, music CDs and movies (tapes/DVDs). Thanks for supporting the young soldier.

To be on the safe side you may want to send a Crewman instead. I know that my unit has a 6" blade limit; I would guess that an infantry unit would be more lenient but you never know. A Crewman is still a heck of a knife. And thank you for supporting our soldiers; kindness such as yours is the only thing that makes it worthwhile sometimes.

carpediem, thanks for suppporting the troops.:) If you are sending to an APO the cost should not be to bad. Most of the time you will pay standard Domestic Shipping rates for packages going to APOs. :) If you need info about shipping charges, restrictions and such (Some APOs have them depending on the country) call the USPS at 1-800-ASK-USPS. They would be more than happy to help you out.

BTW I think the Crewman would be a good knife to send him.

I'd go ahead and send him the BK7, in desert tan of course. I hear the hottest item in theater is fresh dip, Copenhagen of course. Kudos to you for organizing these care packages. Letters, just notes really, from the kids in church are a really, really good sunday school idea and well recieved by the troops.

I do have an APO for the soldiers address. I will also check with UPS for shipping info too. Magazines are an excellent idea, I will pick an assortment to send along.
I was able to contact an Army Major General, he said no problem with the 7" blade CU-7. So I will order a desert model today. I will be shipping wipes that have a light lemon scent and are individually wrapped. Also single use bath towels in an 8 pack. I will also walk through a convenience store for fingernail clippers, etc. When I get this stuff all together I'll post some photos for you.
I might look into some SAK's as well depending on how sales go on some personal items.

I received some samples from Diamond Wipes Int'l. Inc. The bath wipes come in a resealable pack, 8 towels, hot/cold disposable soft towels, premoistened with Vitamin E and deoderant. These things are neat, definitely on the list. Also single use towels with SPF 30 sunscreen, Avon also sells a 2.5 ounce bottle of sunscreen with a sponge applicator so you don't get any on your hands, I think this would be preferred. I'll send some of both and see what the men prefer.
Depending on cash flow what do you think would be better, a SAK like a Hiker model or the Soldier model. Or maybe a multi tool.

Thanks again for the help on this,

Tom

A multi-tool would be superior to a SAK in every way, shape and form over there.

I know those guys appreciate that stuff BIG time...thanks for serving our country, albeit in a different form.
