A Little Help from you all: BK14/11 sheath mod

Hello Becker-dom

I need some advice on a sheath mod I am working on for my 14/11 stock sheath. Until I can afford a kick-ass sheath from one of you awesome Beckerites, I have to make due with the stock sheath. My mod is using Blackhawk (i think) plastic belt keepers to mount the sheath to my belt riding scout style. This setup would be for an EDC option.

What I need advice on, seeing as how I have only the "one" sheath is: What method should I use to attach/secure the belt keeper(s) button base/strap to the front of the sheath. I am currently considering JB Weld, or some high grade epoxy (unknown which at this point) but this solution, if it works, is permanent. I just can't pull the trigger on attaching them because...well, I don't want to eff up the sheath and then have no sheath.
Also, I'm not sure if I want belt keepers permanently affixed to the sheath as this would limit carry options (its kind of bulky for a pocket). Also, as you can see in the last pic I have the scout ride mocked up on my belt (actually this ride is pretty damn secure without the keepers permanently attached) but once I remove the knife from the belt I risk loosing a keeper.

So, any ideas you guys might have on how to attache the keepers (whether permanent or temporary)???

sorry for the first two pics, they were supposed to be rotated for easier viewing....grrrrrrr

how about getting some peel and stick 1/2" velcro from your local fabric store and sticking the soft side to the sheath and the other side to the straps?

DOH!!! LOL.....of course. I feel kind of stoopid right now. But I'm open to many options at this point.

consider looking at a Tek-Lok, its a clip that you screw into holes on the sheath, and it clips onto your belt.

Paracord through the eyelets, then loop the keepers under the Paracord.

I tried this, and while they did hold the keepers to the sheath the whole setup was rather bulky feeling. Its a nice option though and nice for field expediency. Thanks.

Ok, so I EDC'd with the keepers all day long like pictured above. I had the day off so I took the kids to school then ran some errands and then out to lunch. The keeper setup worked phenomenally. It's like it wasn't even there. I didn't have the keepers secured to the sheath and there was no slippage or extra movement.

I'm going with velcro for now. I have some laying around.

Thanks all

Great idea with the belt keepers. I like that! My 14 has become my constant companion now. I have a leather sheath for it but also want to put the factory sheath to use also as another option. This may be just the trick.

Given the distances on those buttons you are going to have a hard time attaching them without drilling holes in your sheath. One thing to look at is the bottom side snap of the button setup. Some of those have holes through them that go all the way through. If that is the case with yours, you can put a small screw through that hole and then a small nut on the backside of the sheath. If you run the screw through one of the existing eyelets, say towards the bottom, that should be a sufficient enough attachment to keep the belt keepers from running off, but that is dependent on there being a hole through the bottom eyelet. If there is not a hole in the bottom one, is it able to be drilled out? If so (and probably if so it would be a very tiny hole, less than 1/8") then maybe you can drill it out to use with a small screw. Several kydex sheath makers use this method to make their retention adjustable on their sheaths, or reversible for south paws and the like.

I've used keepers on my 14 for almost as long as I've had it. Nvr bothered fixing them to the sheath, as I don't ever unbutton them. I just slide my belt through and everything is nice and snug. The velcro thing seems like the easiest non permanent bond though.

nice looking keepers but why not just use paracord? I do. Then when you have a new sheath made ask the maker to size it for your keepers.

I installed the velcro and it works awesomely so far. The real test(s) will be this next week (camping for 6 days) and then BeckerWest in April. I'll post pics of the mod as soon as I can.

Interesting.....and quiet a sound mod. However, I'd probably F it up, LOL

Thanks Derek

For anyone interested to see how the velcro turned out. Also, I used it all week long camping and it did not disappointment me, not one bit

You're new here... No worries.

Bumping a thread that's been dead for almost 5 years is generally frowned upon. It's ok. Don't be discouraged. We tend not to canibalize new guys unless they're really bad. :p
