Hello All,,,,

I need some help. Even after all the excellent advice on grinding that has been offered, I still need some visual "like this" help. I have been told by some makers here in Colorado that for a small fee they could give me lessons ,,, not what I need. What I need is just a day or two observing someone actually grinding. Will sweep or make coffee or etc........ If there is a maker in the front range who needs their oil changed for a little advice (visual),,, please let me know. Thanks ,,,,,JM

JM,
Sorry to hear about your problem. I would be more than willing to help you but I live in Texas. Almost all the knifemakers I know are more than willing to give advise and let you watch them work. I personally will teach anyone that is interested how to build a knife for free. I was very fortunate to meet Tom Bullard and he took me under his wing and answered all the dumb questions I had, and even heat treated my knives for free until I got my own oven. Therefore, I feel obligated to do the same. Hope you find some help. Don't give up.

If you are ever in Grand Junction, or want to drive over for a day. You are welcome to watch or take a turn. Not sure about grinding a whole day, usually 1/2 is all I can manage. Bring some steel, grind your own in the afternoon, you would need to supply belts or pay for them for your blades. No fee otherwise.

For a fee?

WTF?

Sorry to hear about your experiences with some of the local makers. Keep looking.

I had wonderful hands-on from local makers, who claimed they were only passing on what had been given them. I have never forgotten that, and will always do whatever I can to help others, starting out or not.

There are folks in your area who feel the same, for sure.

Keep looking- they are there and will be happy to help. As you read around on the forums keep your eyes peeled for makers within driving range.

Let us know when you locate someone :)

Dave
