Found this minty old pen knife and was wondering if anyone can tell me more about the maker.
Tang Stamp:
J. Moede
Solingen
Rostfrei
Protea

I also want to buy a reference book on pocketknives with lots of illustrations.
Older Sheffield, Solingen and American (non-Case) are my interests.
Is Goins' the way to go?
Any other suggestions?

Sorry... don't know anyhing about that maker. It is a sweet little knife though.

I mostly collect Sheffield knives. The Sheffield Knife Book: A History and Collector's Guide by Geoffrey Tweedale is excellent for history and lots of great photos. Goins is primarily for identifying markings which is very useful. It has a few sketches and photo copies but not the greatest quality graphics. It includes little in the way of history or background to most of the companies. I'm sure others will help with their suggestions for American brands. Levines Guide seems to be popular, but I can't comment as I don't have that one. I hope this helps a little.

The little pen knife is high quality and the fit/finish is superb.
Thanks for the info on the books.

Dirk,

That mark is listed in Levine's Guide #4.

Jurgen Moede...Protea (TM)...a manufacturer based in Solingen from 1963 up at least until #4 was published in 1997.

That's a very nice little knife, for sure.

Dirk, Very nice knife. As far as books. Levine's 4th is a pretty much a standard for identification, but very hard to come by. Blade's Guide to Knives by Steve Shackleford would be the next best and sometimes referred to as Levine's 6th? Goines is a must have and the Geoffrey Tweedale's as mentioned above. There are also lots of books on specific company's that you will need later on. Hope this helps.
