A little help with butterflies, s'il vous plait

Hello everyone. I just got a butterfly (or balisong as they are apparently called) a few days ago. I can get it open and closed fairly simply, and I can hold my own in a fight with knives in general. The problem is I would like to learn how to make it all the spins and tricks and stuff that the Vietnamese in my old neighborhood can do with them. I would greatly appreciate any help anyone could give. Thank you for your time.

Welcome to the balisong forum!! If you want techniques then go to Master Clay's website www.balisongxtreme.com , tons of techniques there to pour over. Also for a good horizontal sheath draw and for lots and lots of balisong/Benchmade Bali-Song information go to www.balisongcollector.com , the sheath draw is here: www.balisongcollector.com/videos.html but don't forget to look around at everything he has there.
Also for techniques go to www.balisong.com under the drop down menu "Techniques", there you'll see movies of Jeff Imada.

Make sure to search all of these sites thoroughly and check all the other balisong related sites in their links section.

Agree on Balisongmans post above but if you can get one of those guys in your neighbor hood to teach you your skills with increase a lot faster!

I learned from most of the knife stores as I traveled around the country and picked up various techniques along the way.

Good luck with the training!

I second th emotion of having a 'real' teacher.. When you see somehting in a book or video you are like.. huh? or no way.. it is more reassuring when you have someone ther eto teach you. People seem less scared when hey see me do n aerial as oposed to seeing master clay do one on video.. until they impale themselves ofcoruse =)

I personally learn well either way, I never knew anybody that could manipulate a balisong so I had to learn from Clay's site and Jeff Imada's books/video clips. The way I feel, as long as you learn the techniques and can to manipulate it w/out having to look at the bali or think about it then you are in good shape.

Thank you all very much for your replies. I will have to practice much more, especially since I just stabbed myself in the leg. I have a cheap balisong that I got from an army surplus and will probably break anyday now. I keep hitting the latch on the blade and I am afraid I may chip it. The links were very helpful, although a teacher would definitely be better. And yes, I am sure they were Vietnamese. Maybe they learned from Philipenos. Anyway, thanks a lot.

Heh, I have a bali that is so cheap that the latch hitting the blade only results in the latch being damaged.
