This is a Colt butterfly pattern that I purchased back in about 1973-74. This knife was designed from another manufacture's pattern. That's the missing part of the history!! Colt had infringed on their pattent and they had to discontinue the manufacturing this pattern of knife. I inserted the photos to help other memories that may be able to recall the original designers pattent that Colt infringed up. I used the knife for a number of years, it's skinned and boned a number of mule deer and elk. Thanks help with the recollections. LOL;)

Barry Woods did those, started with cast handles in a simulated hole pattern like the CRKT M16. Mike Erie did them later.

Woods-Erie knives are hand made customs, the Colts? Probably Taiwan or Japan.

The Colt is not a copy, they were made for Colt by Barry Woods in the early 70's. My guess is Colt stopped carrying them due to cost. Barry Woods has long since retired but there have been copies made. There was a very good copy made in Italy called the Bonanza, these were so good the Barry bought some himself. These were copies of the Model 1. Next Barry designed the Model 1 1/2. It was a slimmer version.

Later we have Mike Irie joining Barry and the Mk2 was designed and produced.

As I said Barry retired and Mike ended up divorced from Barry's daughter and production ended. These knives are easy to find for sale online and command prices from 175 for the Italian copy to 250-300 for Model 1s and higher for 1 1/2s. The Wood/Irie start around 250 as well and go up depending on scale material.

There were also some really cheap copies made, I believe Rigid or Edge did a knockoff of them.

Bingo!!! Barry Woods, thanks for banging the ole' memory box. The knive pictured was in a Colt Box, and is marked with Colt stylized lettering, and Hartford, CT. I also noted the difference between the butt of that handle and straight blade in Absintheur's photo, and in my thumb nail, mine is more pointed. The shealth that came with mine is stamped with the Colt Logo and a snap that left marks on the handle material. Thanks for the details I do appreciate it, and any others are welcome. Thanks. Mike
