My mother is in for a visit and saw me finish off that last little hunter. She asked me to make one for my nephew so she could give it to him as a gift. Apparently he was really taken by the kitchen knife I made my Mum this summer.

Not so constrained by the specs as the last one I think I did a better job of this one balance wise.
The steel is from an old file and is probably W1. She liked the idea of the reused metal and the story behind it.
I even had her whack it a few times with the hammer to add her personal touch to the gift.

The blade is 3 1/4" from the scales to the tip. The OAL is 6 1/4". It's a very comfortable 3 finger knife for me but oughta be perfect for a 10 year old boy.

It was fun for me to have family watch the creation of the knife from the raw material through the finish, and she watched me make the sheath this afternoon.

The polish job on the blade was finished just before Nick's awesome thread on the hamons. Looking at this one, I think the ferric chloride is a bit too strong but there is a nice line so it will have some "wow" factor for my unknowing brother and his son. :p

Thanks for looking.

nice work Branson!
Like the story too.

Great job Stuart - I think I like this one even better. No doubt it will prove to be a treasured gift.

Great history already, and it is fresh out of the shop! That makes customs what they are...very special. Your nephew will be all grins.

Excellent job, Stuart. It looks well balanced, has nice lines, and seems to be really comfortable in hand.

Thanks guys.

My mum has been waffling on the gift idea. It began as a Christmas present but she feels close to this one having watched it being made from start to finish. So she thinking she might actually keep it and I'll do another one for him later. Ha Ha.. :p:D
Either way, I'm happy it's in the family.

btw, this is my 10th finished knife.

Very nice and a cool story that will go a long way at the dinner table......it looks ;ile you change your maker's stamp on this one....and here I was digging the script.

You're a good son, Stuart :)

#10 for a ten year old. Make another for mum.

Thanks again guys.

I think you're right Lorien. I think what got her was the chance to see th whole process and the fact that she got to actually hammer the steel.

you change your maker's stamp on this one....and here I was digging the script.

I've been having trouble doing the script version in such a small scale as my etching set up is a q-tip with a couple cut wires from an ac adapter. When I get a proper set up I will chose the style depending on the knife. I have stencils of both print and script beyond the actual dremel signing method I've been using.

Very nice Stuart , I'll bet he'll be super proud and you just became his favorite uncle. :D
