My mother is in for a visit and saw me finish off that last little hunter. She asked me to make one for my nephew so she could give it to him as a gift. Apparently he was really taken by the kitchen knife I made my Mum this summer.
Not so constrained by the specs as the last one I think I did a better job of this one balance wise.
The steel is from an old file and is probably W1. She liked the idea of the reused metal and the story behind it.
I even had her whack it a few times with the hammer to add her personal touch to the gift.
The blade is 3 1/4" from the scales to the tip. The OAL is 6 1/4". It's a very comfortable 3 finger knife for me but oughta be perfect for a 10 year old boy.
It was fun for me to have family watch the creation of the knife from the raw material through the finish, and she watched me make the sheath this afternoon.
The polish job on the blade was finished just before Nick's awesome thread on the hamons. Looking at this one, I think the ferric chloride is a bit too strong but there is a nice line so it will have some "wow" factor for my unknowing brother and his son.
Thanks for looking.
