I loaned my SAK to this guy a little bit ago to open a bottle of wine with. He's a body-builder type and had to really get on it to get the cork out, and bent my corkscrew. It still fits in my pocket, but it's just sort of bent out of shape. I don't drink wine, so I've never experienced this before. Anybody else ever messed up an SAK corkscrew that way?

All cork screws will eventualy bend-even on waiter's wine openers that are better suited to the job then the cork screw that's on the SAK. Good news is that either of the 2 SAK companies will repair or replace it or at least that's my understanding.

You may actually be able to bend that one back. Maybe not all the way but some..

I think that you should hand your SAK back to the guy who messed it up and tell him to bend it back into the same shape it was originally in or that you'll have to kick his ass.:D.

Customer Service will take care of it for you. Don't be supprised if they just send you a new knife altogether.

I have two Waiters. One new, and one from the 80's Economy series. Both have been bent up pretty badly. Both have bent back as well. I would just be careful not to do this too often as I figure that it must cause fatigue after a while.

It's one of the dirty little secrets about the SAK corkscrews. They are not made of the best steel for this application and can bend, break, and even the pivot can be damaged. I have old corkscrews and they are not bent and still work fine.

I would suggest that you grab your hacksaw, cut it off and claim the little stub that is left is a leather punch! Since you already carry it and don't drink vino you won't devalue the knife and won't get a hole in your pocket.

I like wine as much as anyone (maybe more!), but I've never understood why so many SAK models have corkscrews. Must be a Euro thing.

Anyway, sorry about your loss. Bent parts on my stuff always drive me crazy, too.

How do you open your wine if you don't use a cork screw?

I've used the cork screw on my SAK a lot more than I've used the magnifying glass or awl. Probably more than the can opener even. I think it's a critical item for any SAK.

I lop off the top of the bottle with the saber I always carry around :) . Actually, I have plenty of full-size corkscrews in the kitchen and whenever I've taken wine to someone's house, they always had a real corkscrew handy. Just seems like I'd get a lot more use out of some other tool than I do from the corkscrews on my SAKs. Yeah, the magnifying glasses are pretty useless, but I use an awl pretty regularly when I need a pointy metal thing that doesn't have an edge on it.

Buy a champange saber for wine opening. They can be found on World Knives. Supposedly these were used by Napoleonic cavalry officers to open their wine. Kinda pricy if you don't drink much wine though.
