A little mod. that has made a big diffence to my 25.

The 25 is a knife that I have definite moments of hot and cold over. I do like the micarta a lot more than the standard Ti knife and have been carrying one for a few months now. They both have a big thing that bothers me though, a corner to be exact, a corner right infront of the thumb stud to be more exact. :p
This has been driving me crazy and has even had me put the knife down a few times. This, I know full well, is an operator issue as I'm very much an Umnumzaan guy so I'm all too used to just thumbing along the frame and the blade opens easy as pie. This just doesn't work with the 25 as the bump/corner of the finger cut out ramps you over the thumb stud and you "missfire". It feels like I have to really dig in behind that corner making the opening of the 25 for me a "clumsy" affair.
As with many problems the best and easiest solution is often to just get rid of what ever the problem is. That has held true this time as well, I'm glad to say. :D

As you can see from the pics giving the second finger groove a deeper bevel to remove the corner has made the "run in" to the thumb stud on the 25 more similar to the Umnumzaan. It is subtle enough that it does little to nothing to the feel of the knife in hand but it makes opening the knife much easier. The knife will see a lot more pocket time now that my main gripe with it has been wiped away. :)

Did you take any before pics? I know I could look one up but seeing a side by side image of the same knife would help better illustrate the difference:)
On a side note...I love little mods! They make the knife feel "mine".

The Umnumzaan is such a great opening system. I am always surprised more knives, or at least more CRK models don't employ it. I haven't thought about it until now, but a Sebenza-style knife, with the umnumzaan deployment method, would be a great blade.

How did you achieve that mod?

Aye, good point. I'll dig out a pic and edit the OP. :)

The Umnumzaan is such a great opening system. I am always surprised more knives, or at east more CRK models don't employ it. I haven't thought about it until now, but a Sebenza-style knife, with the umnumzaan deployment method, would be a great blade.

I just touched it on the grinder to remove some material then gave it a quick once over with a diamond file and a hand sand to finish. literally just 10-15 minutes. I might clean it up a bit more and blast it later, but it's a user so I may not bother. :)

Looks great! Definitely much nicer looking than the similar mod I did on my small Freedom.

Haze, that looks really, really great. I imagine that the functional improvement for your chosen deployment method is substantial. I too favor the Zaan-push method.

I also picked up a Micarta 25 mostly to defeat the clip-poke that occurs in the second finger groove, but after installing a Ti Lock clip, I actually found I prefer the slimmer plain version. I tend to favor non-inlay for large models, but much prefer inlays on smalls.

Great idea, Haze.
I can tell from the pics that you can now get your thumb to the side of stud much more easily.

Nice mod! While I do not open my knife like you do, I can see how that would make a more user friendly scale for everyone. It still retains all 'functionality' of the finger grooves.

Looks like a good job. I am surprised you did not sell it. I am the type of guy if its not right from the start, I move on to something else that will be. That knife is somewhat custom for you which is pretty cool.

Shows that the 25, like any new model has room for personalization, or improvement in some areas...The Seb has sure evolved/devolved depending on your likes and dislikes!I never met a large I didn't like!

Well Haze, just another small issue I've never thought about, now you've got me thinking if my 25 needs that mod
I enjoy it the way it is, but a little tweeking never hurts.
Other than the difference in texture, it almost looks factory.
