I'm a little new around here but I've always liked knives ever since I was little and fudge too but that's for another forum. When I was about 6 yrs old I wanted a little toy pocket knife which had a blade with no edge on it. I was unfortunately told no by my mother. I was horribly saddened by that and still am to this day. Somehow despite the heartbreak I managed to live on. It wasn't until I was about 14 or 15 that I had received a knife for free. Now that I think about it its a rather odd story. I went with my Grandparents to some sort of expo for sewage disposal. My Grandfather was on the board for the Western Westmoreland Municipal Authority (WWMA) which is basically a sewage plant. Each booth for various companies were giving away free little trinkets keychains mugs etc. but at one they were giving away little pocket knives and I snagged one. I unfortunately had to sit through a very long presentation on sewage processes before I was allowed to go to the booths. Anyways, It fell out of my pocket about 6 months later. Luckily, a month of two later, for Christmas my cousin got me a knife. Maybe, a year after that I ruined the knife by trimming a bunch of shingles when I was helping my Grandfather put up a little roof over his back door. There were big chips and tar all over the blade. I needed a new knife and went to a bunch of different stores looking for one I liked and ended up buying a buck mayo cutback. I've since used but never abused that knife like all the others since it was the first knife I bought with my own money. About 2 years ago I got bit by the bug and started buying knives. I bought an assisted opener, then a tanto, and a neck knife but none of them replaced my buck. I then bought a couple opinels with carbon blades which managed to kick the buck out of my pocket for a while. I even showed one to my Grandfather who put on his glasses the same way he always does whenever I show him anything of mine. He looked it over very closely, turned it over in his hands a couple times and mumbled something about it being french and not having a proper lock. Having worked for GM for 40 years and UAW member for even longer he likes things made in America and the french knife didn't change anything. Soon, the opinels were put away in my drawer relegated to kitchen duty and the buck was back in my pocket. Thanks to this forum, I really got into traditional pocket knives. This Christmas I bought a Case blue jigged bone mini trapper which I love but it hasn't quite made it into my pocket for some reason. A little bit after Christmas I bought a pocket worn bermuda green Case peanut. It was a rather unimpressive unboxing with me searching through the tissue paper trying to find where the measly little thing was. I'm not a big fan of the pocket worn look and the bermuda green looks a little like dark vomit. I think the peanut sensed my contempt for it because when I went to close the spear blade it just barely bit the skin on my finger. The same thing even happened again a little bit later. Well, the peanut has snuck its way into my pocket and scared the big buck mayo folder away. The "measly little vomit green" peanut has never left me wanting for blade length or handle size. I find that I even prefer the spear point over the clip point. Although, its still a little temperamental when insulted. I'm not sure why I love it so much but I think it might have something to do with it reminding me of the little edgeless toy pocket knife I was unjustly denied as a child.

I never actually meant to write more than a paragraph, scout's honor.

Excellent post Mr. Lowe. Love that username too.

Welcome to the forum and thank you for sharing your story with us.

You did write one paragraph...lol.
Our Traditional knives are many things to us. Psychologist, educator, healer, instigator, reminder, trigger, and providor of peace and solice. Sometimes even awakener, although it may take a bite or two.
Welcome my Friend

Great username, I love that song. "Play on your dobro"...

Those peanuts will bite you back if you don't watch them. Mine has kicked most of my other knives out of my pocket. I think that my Vic Pioneer and cv chestnut Peanut must have a staredown standoff, complete with lint rolling through. Can't choose, carry both.

Great story.

Welcome to the best forum in the 'net, Mr. Lowe. This a friendly place, so pull up a chair and sit a spell.

You did well by getting a peanut. It's been rumored that I have a strong bias for the little 'nuts, and I fear that may have some truth. Peanuts are sneaky little things, and have a way of worming their way into your pockets day after day. But they will cut, so be respectful of them.:thumb up:

Carl.

Hey welcome to the forum :) I found your story a very good read---as many will state there's a lot of respect for the "nut" in these parts:thumbup:

Look forward to hearing from you in the future!!!

Paul

Great post! Welcome to the forum!

Another new-ish member around here, though I got my first pocket knife (Imperial shell handled Barlow) when I was 8 and I still have it some 40 years later. A search on the Case Trapperlock landed me here as a lurker about six months ago. I saw the Trapperlock somewhere on the web and decided to do a search on it, which led me to Blade Forums. Something clicked as I hadn't picked up any knives for awhile, since I bought some SAK's when I became a Scout leader 10 years ago.

I've discovered this is a dangerous place and I don't even say how much I've spent in that last 6 months. All I know is I've learned a heckuva a lot, found some great traditionals, and also learned first hand that a Case Peanut can take a nip out of you if you don't show it enough respect.

Now I have a second Peanut on the way... :D

Welcome Zippo. Looks like you live in mecca for collecting. The interesting thing about traditional knife collecting is that it leads you to many places and things you would never have experienced. At least it has me.

I live just close enough to Bradford/Titusville to be tempting, but just far enough away that it needs to be a very special trip. I visited Zippo and Case awhile back and it put a significant dent in my bank account... :D

welcome and thanks for sharing your story! and i agree and understand about the little knives getting a little temperamental when insulted. my pocket hunter (sub three inch) tends to bite when I forget how great it is :p

Welcome on board... Here´s a warning, this forum makes addictive ;)

Kind regards
Andi
