Here is a little news I can remember from last night's phone conversation with Gelbu and Pradeep.

1) The second floor of BirGorkha has been completed and is now occupied by:

a) Bura, one of his wives, and two kids. This is handy for him as he was commuting from Swayambu to BirGorkha and that was taking an hour to an hour and a half one way every day. Now he is a flight of stairs from work.

b) Kumar and his wife. When he was back home to help with planting Kumar packed up his wife and brought her back to BirGorkha. I have not met her but we should be getting pix soon. Locals would not believe him when he told them how much money he was earning.

c) Two of Kumar's helpers (and his cousins, besides being helpers) have a room on second floor and share meals with Kumar.

d) Sher is staying with the two cousins and also shares meals with Kumar when they are on speaking terms.

e) And three or four sarkis have a room where they work and stay part time.

Add it up and we have 12 or 13 people living in a fairly small space and this is the basic story of Nepal and most third world countries. They do not enjoy the square feet per person that we do in this country. Why? A matter of basic economics.

For whatever it is worth rent is free for the people on floor two and also for the men who are staying with Gelbu but they may be charged a token fee for utilities starting in July.

No shop in Nepal can even dream about offering the pay and perks offered by BirGorkha and this is all because of HI customers. As usual, our workers all send their best regards to customers and pals here. They are still looking for more customer pix to put on the walls.

More news as this worn and ragged brain can drag it up.

Khukuri FAQ

Would that be pictures sent by post, or e-mail? If by post, what's the address and when I get a decent picture of both me and a khukuri I'll send them one.

Kevin if you can email me the pix I'll email them over to Gelbu and he will print a copy for posting on our bulletin board in the shop. Have you seen the customer pix board?

And, thanks. The kamis value the pix as much as a nice gift.
