I got a couple of question for you Ron.
Why is the knife's edge grind so thick. Although it is a chisel edge grind, still the enge is quite thick for it.
Also I found that the combination bottle opener and slot screw driver doesn't work that well on Heineken ;) It works fine to lift the cap, but it's not enough to lift it in one go, You would have to put it at a different spot to fully lift the cap off the bottle.
Also, it's nice to have the 90 degree setting for the Phillips, but the tool cover often get in the way of uisng the 90 degree setting. I haven't taken it off because I don't find myself in such a tight situations all the time, but I would if I have to sneek the powerlock in a tight spot.
It would be nice if the R&D would look into the bottle cap problem and the edge grind on the blade. I don't use it often, but if my knives doesn't work with the public, I would just pull out the multitool's blade to work.

The difficulty in opening the bottles might just be technique. How many Heineken's did you try opening? Remember, you're just "trying out your bottle opener". ;)

Hey Calyth,

What are you "nit-picking" our PowerLock for? If you're not careful, you'll be banned from the SOG Forum for being a dissenter! ;) With the kidding aside, here's my "official" responses:
  • Blade Edge: I’m not sure what the edge angle is, but it should come quite sharp. If yours is not, please email me, and we’ll work something out.
  • Bottle Opener: Though the “technique” comments may have some merit (and the allusion to bottles you may have consumed), I lend toward the bottle cap type being an issue. Maybe you need to try Miller or Coors? ;) In our R&D beer bottle testing weekend party binge, I can assure you that it was only an oversight due to sheer volume that we didn’t try the bottle opener on the Heineken. :D

OK, that levity aside, for the most part, “technique” is the issue. Just work at it a bit and the cap will come off. But, we’re always working making a better product. We’ll look at making the bottle cap opener a more functional one (it’ll take a few more “cases” of research for us, I’m sure!).
  • Phillips Screwdriver: Your comment has been shared to me by a couple other people. You’ll notice that we made the handle cover very easily removable. That’s your answer. Just slip off the cover and it is no longer in your way.
Thanks for your input and I’m glad you like your tool. If you have further questions or comments, please let me know.

Edge: Well it can go through paper well, but it seems not sharp enough to make easy cut on a 2mm leather. Quite a bit of effort is required for the cut.
Bottle opener: I've also opened Barcadi Silver bottles (although they're twist caps I prefer to lift them off) and they ahve a smiliar problem. I probably need to try more. When you lift a cap, you know there is a point where the bottle opener use as a pivot. I suspect that part of the opener needs lowering so that the cap can be lift a bit easier.
You can see that on the Leatherman Juice CS4 (the one that I use to carry), the bottle opener's "pivot" point is quite a bit lower, in comparison to the Powerlock's. The CS4 bottle opener's problem is that the part that hook on the edge of the cap has a tendency to chew up the cap, while the powerlock has the problem that it couldn't lift it off in one motion. Again we all have to do some research on this by opening more bottles ;) :D
Phillips: Point taken... I suspect that I would have to open the tool completely and take off the tool cover to truly allow the powerlock to slip into narrow places for those pesky screws.

Remeber, its a multi tool. Individual tools suffer as a result of it being a multi-tool. It cannot have the best of each tool cause you hve to comprimise.

J: but the PowerLock is so close to perfect, I'm tempted to make it really perfect ;)
That's why I titled nickpicking :P
