A little NYC story, thought this was funny...

I went out camping the weekend of Sept. 10 and 11 from NYC using public transportation. As you might expect, the security was beefed up there majorly over that weekend. (I personally find it odd and gaudy to be attacked again on a 10th anniversary, but drama's what attracts people, I suppose.) Had three knives on me, all illegal to carry unless I was going to do something that traditionally uses knives, which I was. Still, I knew the NYPD was on edge that day, and even at other times I'm subject to whatever the officer feels at the time.

The bus schedules had changed on me, and I was completely lost, so I ended up going to three major train stations and asking a bunch of groups of police for help with directions. They did not check me or my huge pack at all, but then again, nor did I really exhibit fear. I was just worried about missing a camping trip or getting a late start in the day!

Not to laugh at the NYPD or knife laws or anything. The experience just makes me chuckle, in hindsight, since prior to that I have been absolutely paralyzed with fear of carrying around knives in NYC. Not that I'll do it freely now, of course.

Running away from police makes them suspicious, not walking up to them asking for information. :D

A couple of them stopped me one day, asked for ID, and asked if I was carrying any weapons. I handed one of them my cane, took out my wallet to show my ID, and he gave me back my cane, thank you, goodbye. The cane was the lower portion of the Crawford Survival Staff, with a Push Pick for a t-handle, heavy aluminum shaft and steel fittings. My brother used to call it my war hammer. No, officer, I don't have any weapons ...

You mean you were randomly stopped for no reason and asked for ID?
I find this practice very disturbing.
Do you think they would confiscate something like a lockback GEC?

scaysharp, it wasn't in NYC, it was late at night, pedestrians were a rare sight in that community. They were pretty cool about it and didn't pat me down, just asked. They didn't flinch at a heavy-duty metal stick, I doubt they'd have called a small knife a weapon, either.

scarysharp they stop people all the time for no real reason....google NYPD stop and frisk and see that over 600,000 persons were stopped last year in NYC with only 50,000 having any action taken against them meaning the rest were totally stopped for no reason.....Nassau is headed there and Suffolk is on their way too....lets not forget over 65% of the new Nassau and Suffolk officers were recent NYPD officers who were waiting for the list on those other agencies to call them....

That practice may end real soon. NYPD Officer Michael Daragjati is being held without bail on federal civil rights charges for falsely arresting a black man who objected to being stopped and frisked for no good reason by Officer Daragjati. The federal magistrate called the arrest "blatantly racist" as he refused bail. Most likely, he will do his time in PC, since he probably won't survive one night in general population after other inmates find out he is LE. Just think: one more soon-to-be-ex-officer and newly-minted convicted federal felon! :D Let's hope this is the beginning of a trend!

The real problem isn't Officer Daragjati, it is the command structure all the way up to the Mayor that established these policies.

Mayor Mike and his PD Commish are to blame...they violate the Constitution and are proud of it......I can't believe this has been allowed to happed for so long....
