I was playing around with the scanner today, then doing a little digital editing in Adobe PhotoDeluxe and came up with these...

The first one is Ed Caffrey's Desert Eve - one of his five Mastersmith knives: http://home.carolina.rr.com/senator/images/Caffrey_Desert_Eve.jpg

The next one is a John Fitch Sheffield-style bowie forged from 1084 that I'm making payments on. Gus Kalanzis took the picture. I just played around with the pic. http://home.carolina.rr.com/senator/images/Fitch_Bowie.jpg

Here's my Talonite Model 4 from Kit Carson: http://home.carolina.rr.com/senator/images/Carson_M4_Talonite.jpg

The last one is a Speedtech Synergy: http://home.carolina.rr.com/senator/images/Speedtech.jpg

PhotoDeluxe has a feature that allows you to erase the background and put your own image in its place. I seemed to get a little better with each one I did, with the Caffrey and Fitch being the best. I thought those two had very appropriate background images considering their names and style. What do you think?

Howdy Senator!
Came out really nice! I've dabbled around with what you've done a few times, mostly in Photoshop, but never with results that sweet.

Listen, I know this may be outta line, but could you get my face on Debbie Norville's chest? I guess a photo of that would be okay, too.

Kelly, I use PhotoDeluxe also, it's like the kiddie version of Adobe PhotoShop, but it's been keeping me busy enough with all the possibilities. It's a fun program.

VG, if you get me a pic of Debbie, I'll be glad to put your head wherever you want.

Kelly,

It would be interesting to be able to compare the unenhanced scan of the Caffrey to your enhanced version. I'd like to see how much you were able to enhance the lighting effects on the knife itself.

I sure haven't had that much success with my older version of PhotoShop, but I have a feeling that you are getting better output from your scanner than I am. Which scanner are you using?

Mark

Thanks, Randy. I fondled it several times at the Blade Show, but was out of cash. I was suprised when Gus posted on tkc-l that he was selling it as a favor to John, who isn't on the internet. I called John and worked out a payment plan with him. I can't wait to receive it.

Mark - I have an HP 5200 series scanner. With satin finished knives it usually takes several trial-and-error scans to get a decent scan - one without bright spots or colors of the spectrum on the blade or guards. As a general rule I add about 15% brightness and 10-15% contrast to get a life-like image.

On the Caffrey knife I had several places on the guard that always had bright spots no matter how I scanned it. I used the "clone" feature to copy another part of the guard that wasn't as bright. I'm not entirely happy with the results of the guard as you can clearly see where I cloned it, but I'll get better as I do more.

I also liked this background for the Caffrey piece, but couldn't decide which one I liked more. Any thoughts on this picture?

Ok senator...share your secret

In photo deluxe...I can remove background using the smart select and the eraser...but not near as well as you have done. When I do it, the knife comes out a little blocky looking. What tool do you use? I would greatly appreciate any advice you can give me, thanks.

Kelly, I am taking good care of your (John's) knife. Those pictures are great.

Richard - I just use the eraser while blowing up the picture to 400-800%. Oh yeah, being anal helps.

Kelly that is fantastic! I prefer the first picture of the Ed Caffery knife the red is a bit to close in color to the handle and something gets lost in the second photo IMNSHO.

VG you are too funny! Nevada has not been the same since you got there I am quite sure.

Stay Well
