I am using a Koster's Burshcraft (my one and only Bushcraft knife - although I may buy his next generation when it is released) here.

Here is a pic of the knife taken a while back:

I decided to practice (while the kids were riding their bikes) making a figure four trap (modified) with some dowling I found in the garage:

I was not careful enough to make sure my knotches (where they peices cross) were tight enough. This is crucial and it took some tweaking to get the trap to hold. Because of this, though, it was a hair trigger. The kids decided to help me set it off a few times in the yard:

Also, they needed new casting weights for their fishing poles - so I decided to whittle a few with some cedar I had sitting around. I have gotten this Kosters to be SUPER sharp - and it was a joy to use it this much:

I dunked them in a little stain I had sitting around for fun and the turned out fun. It was a great way to pass an afternoon watching the kids ride bikes and play football.

My oldest then asked 'Can we make fire?' - so he helped me make a bow drill fire. He holds the other side of a bow and we do a sawing action. He is getting good!

Great job man, another fine example of a father being a father. keep up the good work. How does that koster handle in your opinion? was it comfortable? easy to sharpen? how is it for everyday tasks? i am debating buying one and just wanted someones honest opinion on it.

Great pics, but now you have to show pictures of your boys fishing with those new bobbers

Sharp,

Mine is in S3V - It is not easy to sharpen - unless you have diamond bench stones. However, even with those they can take some time. However, when you get it sharp it STAYS sharp for a VERY long time. The first generation bushcrafter was a little thin - but comfortable.

It depends on what you want out of steel and what sized hands you have. If you like a thinner handle - get a 1st or second generation. If you have bigger hands - he is starting work on the 3rd generation soon - with a little more guard and thick scales.

If you want a super steel and don't mind a little more work with a diamond stone - get the S3V. If you want a little more ease in sharpening get at ATS 34 he is coming out with.

I also saw he did a run in 01.

I love the knife - and sheath is TOP notch.

hey thanks alot for the advise talfuchre
I was looking at a second gen, but maybe i will wait for the third gen.
Right on brother:thumbup:

The second gen is a little thicker - I want to say about 1/8th inch. The third generation looks even better.

Check out his forum on this board for a difference.

Great pics, it's always nice to get some good carving practice. I spend way too much time by the fire doing the same thing. Good looking fish, but I gotta say, you're kids look a little disgusted with your efforts at the figure 4.. :D ;)

Max, the one on the left, simply wants me to get on to tripping the trap.

Lambert, the one on the right, would REALLY like to play football.

Either that or both of them are saying - that is some TERRIBLE woodcraft dad! ;)

Hey Talfuchre - is the upper and trigger of your trap tied at the point? Also, I was farting around with some chop-stick figure fours :D and noticed the same thing, the trigger/base stick have to be pretty snug! Nice project and fun with the boys!

Yeah - Doc turned me on to that. I made a little notch for the string to fit in - tied two simple knots and it is one less point I have to try and hold when I am setting the trap. I like this version best if I have cordage.

Doc, who in turn was shown that by our New Zealand brother, Coote, who recently married, has had other things on his mind and has not been here much of late. Hopefully, that will be corrected in the New Year.
