YAWN!!! - - - - -
Up late playing poker last night (we only play nickel ante) celebrating a friend's birthday.
Decided to do a few things at random that I've thought of in the past, but never got around to. Posting these is one of them
I have been slowly collecting Custom versions of the traditional old Harness Jack, and here are a couple of composite pictures of them. They span 8-9 years. It's like pulling teeth getting these guys to make the HJs, because it's a lot more work making a punch than a more conventional blade.
A tip of the hat to these talented and brave souls who have produced these beauties!

I have a couple more, but I have hidden them from myself somehow:rolleyes: - I'll add them as I find them . . . .Please enjoy!

I don't know how many times you've been told this, but you are a true gift to this forum. The pictures you post cover all kinds of patterns, and the makers that just don't get thrown in the faces of us "rookie" traditional fans. Thanks for posting, and leading me to a divorce some day over "You bought what"!?

Mark, I hope you weather whatever storms are coming up!
And I'm glad you like the pics!:D

Those are very cool and its neat to see each maker's version. You say it was like pulling teeth? Could you get one of those guys to just make me a single blade knife? :D

Wow Charlie! Color me green! That is quite a collection from some of the best.

I appreciate the kind comments, folks - thanks.
And you are all most welcome.

Speechless! What a grand custom collection of a wonderful pattern! Interesting to see variation of the different punches, blades, and scale selections. Thanks for sharing!

Oh Charlie, mate...I really hate to do this to you my friend, the lot of them are Fakes!!....send them to me mate, and I will make sure that the people responsible get a nasty letter! :D

Ok...so thats not going to work, all I can say is those are a handfull of absolute beauties.... How could you choose from any of those talented makers?...my eye keeps going back to the two HJ's of Terry Davis..the Spear point always wins for me, but that Clip Point of Terrys is different enough thats its seeing me, and raising me by a nickel !

Nice!

The leather worker in me wants to try the different punches and see how they work at punching leather!

I sure like the warncliff on that Rupple!

Great stuff Charlie!

Do you have a favorite punch design in that group? Not the knife or maker, just the design of the punch itself.

Jake, some of the punches are direct copies of old punches. Ruple's is an Ulster design, Davis' punches are Robeson. Ken Erickson's is real close to a Remington.
Stu, Tony Bose's is his own invention, and I'd call it the best one there - they are all good, but it cuts Oak-tanned leather like butter!
The Shadley is similar to several "folded" style punches, but is milled from a solid billet!
Richard Rogers made that knife a Sheepfoot jack, which is very rarely seen in old HJs.
Glad everyone is enjoying these. It's way more fun displaying them than keeping them socked away in a safe.

I knew from your recent thread the others were reproductions, and I thought I had read an old post of yours about the Bose punch before but wasn't sure.
Not surprising that the "Old Dog" further improved upon something that has been improved on for centuries, if not millenia.

Very cool collection Charlie. They are all incredible, but the Reese knife is especially nice.

I agree with everyone here, these knives not only are made by some of THE best makers out there, but I just cannot stop looking at the stunning knives that they are!
To own just one of those very high grade knives would be a highlight in our time as knife enthusiasts, so Charlie I hope I dont sound silly by thanking you for sharing these wonderful examples with us, I think by our point of view we agree whole-heartedly that they are better pictured than locked away.

I was actually talking about Charlie and the his lovely HJ's yesterday, as I was camping and was sharpening my bladeforums knife ( 2011) and the shape of the knife came up in discussion with my Partner ( Sue ) and I, I also happened to have my equal ended Jack GEC which has a punch, and Sue asked me just what the punch was for, now folks please correct me if I was wrong in my explanation...but this is what I told Sue, as to be honest I am only going by what I have read.....
I thought that the punch was used in the Harness Jack style at the period when the horse was still the most commonly used as transport, also a precious utility tool as in farm work etc and the punch would serve as a piercing tool if there was a breakage in leather-you could on the spot repair and ream a new hole in the leather and re-strap etc the leather and carry on your way etc.........is this correct? because when I am looking at charlie's knives...there are a lot of variations to the punch, and I just do not understand the reason as to why there are so many variations?...it seems some punches are made for more leather carving than piercing?
Please forgive me if I sound completely out of touch :o

Charlie, some great knives there. Whit a knife like this, I may solve 90% of my tasks on the woods.
Question: there is some similar (blade, reamer) + wood saw? I really would like to make a try if.
