A while back I sent Joel some examples of antique factory capped bolstered Dr. Knives out of my collection. Joel was the first maker I have run into that decided he wanted to try to make one the way it used to be done and it was not an easy task. I have a feeling this old friend was cussing me (not a thing you would expect from Joel :D) while he was trying to figure out how he was going to get that capped bolster to mate with the backsprings and liners.

Ats-34, gold shield and pins with a stunning set of perl scales.

Here is the result of his efforts and it is awesome.

OH WOW! If it was such a trial to do, you don't think he'll do anymore? That would be a shame, because that really separated him from the pack I think.

I think he will Bob, and yes as far as physicians knives Joel is the first person I know to have done it (at least in modern times).

Joe Kios did one for me a couple of years ago and it is beautiful also, but his approach was to alter the fit to a normal bolster and shave it down leaving just a tad more depth than you see on the antiques. It looks great, and I love the knife (who wouldn't), but Joels technique captured the thin cap reproduction to a T. I hope to talk him into a "family" of these in three sizes.

Jack Davenport is giving it a shot. It is supposed to be ready at Blade next year.

That's a beauty, Gus. You know how to pick 'em! :)

I'd be proud too....

Sweeeeet!!! I love the old seal cap bolsters on the old docs and this is a dandy version of them. The slightly serpentine handle profile looks a lot like that of a couple of great old Cattaraugus docs I've seen.
