Since I've asked a lot of questions, thought I should indicate that I may be making some use of all your answers. Here is the first of my blades. Just got them cleaned up and etched in some hot vinegar. They are O-1 cut and rough ground with an angle grinder and finished up with a file/sand paper. Hope to start handles this weekend.....

Nice looking blades for your first attempt. Careful you may get the knifemaking fever. There is no cure for this bug that I am aware of.

I love that angle grinder for rough shaping it sure saves on the belts.

anvilring...They are clay hardened.....
Jim...Too late.....I don't even bother unplugging or putting away my angle grinder. Use it about every time the shop light gets turned on.

By the way, my wife wants the names and addresses of the varmits that talked me into another hobby.......

Thanks all for the advice/encouragement...

edited::::Forgot to mention - the tanto kitchen knife has a 6-1/2"X 5/32 thick blade (chisle-ground(on one side)). It is ment for chopping vegetables. It sharpens up incredibly sharp and chops like an axe. Hasn't dulled much after the 2X4 test. Still shaves arm hair. However, I probably didn't concentrate the chops on one section of the blade as well as I should for the test to really prove anything. Really like O-1 steel!
