My son has a relatively unused CRKT large Tanto folder. He doesn’t really carry it but it had developed some speckled rust on the blade and handle liners. I was home sick with an cold and decided to tinker a bit and see if I could get the rust off.

I managed to disassemble the knife without loosing anything. This is one of the knives with the Auto-LAWKS knife safety. I figured a few springs would fly, but everything was nicely contained. There is one Teflon and one bronze washer, both well greased from the manufacturer.

I took out the blade and liners and cleaned them with Barkeepers Friend. No idea where this stuff has been, but it worked really well and cleaned the rust off the liners and blade. I dried everything and left enough of the factory grease to cover the washers. I managed to get it back together with no parts left over.

It is one of the models with the guard projections on the blade and can be “wave” opened if the clip is in the “tip-up” position. When reassembling, I swapped the clip to use this feature.

Tomorrow I’ll resharpen the blade. It’s partially serrated and the straight edge is chisel ground w/r to the secondary bevel. I have a newly acquired Work Sharp Precision Adjust which should make short work of adding a new edge and a Sharpmaker for the serrations. I’m not sure how it will work in the Tanto tip, but I’ve been wanting a Tanto for a while. This will be a good chance to try it out.
