Good morning all you knife nuts.
I want to share with you something private of mine in exchange for all the wonderful knowledge I have accumulated on this website. It has been absolutely wonderful to find all this knowledge in one place from all of you for I have sought this knowledge elsewhere for many a year with little luck or at least nothing campared to finding this jackpot of solid knife knowledge that this websit is.

These are pictures of where my family is from. These are islands in a bay in west Iceland called Breidafjordur and the islands are Flatey (flat island) and Hergilsey (impossible to tranlate) The island of Hergilsey is most famous for being one of the scenes in the saga of one of our heroes from old, Gisli Sursson who was exciled in the year 964 and stayed in Hergilsey from 966 for 3 years and was killed 14 years later.
He slept in pretty much the same place as my great grandfather and mother on the island.

In 1783 the first people for many years started living on the island again and my great grandfather and mother moved there in 1915 and lived there until 1946. Then they moved to a bigger island called Flatey. We now have summer houses there and I go there to hunt Puffin and other birds, seals and collect eggs and Eider down, wich is the stuff the bird called Eider plucks from its chest to keep the eggs warm. It is used for pillows and sleeping covers where it is cold and is extremely expensive.

On this trip I we went to collect Eider Down and I took some of my knives with me. I have seen pictures in posts from you guyes and I love good pictures of beautiful knives.

The islands that the pictures of knives are taken in are not inhabited and are only occupied by birds and wildlife. And they are absolutely steaming with life at this time of the year, absolutely wonderful to walk there.

Thank you for the tour that was very nice.
I have heard/read nothing but neat things regarding Iceland... maybe one day...

This is great stuff but it belongs in The Gallery -- and please don't keep hitting the New Thread button to continue on the same topic; there's a Reply button at the bottom of the thread. I'll combine the threads and move it to The Gallery.

Thank you for sharing!
Very scenic, it must be a great place for the outdoorsman. Why are there no native Icelandic knives in the pictures? :D

Hi lorise,

Well that was enjoyable. I really appreciate your time spent shooting, editing and posting. It brought me out of my den to another world about 2000 miles away. Nice.

Interesting histories and stories. Thank you!

Coop

Lorise, I really enjoyed those photos you posted. Thanks for sharing them with us. About 10 or 15 years ago I read a book written by Tom Clancy who writes a lot of action novels. The story takes place in the area of Reykjavik and it is about a very small unit of American soldiers who are there when a Russian invasion of Iceland takes place. The Americans fight back, as we are inclined to do, and some "knife action" is mentioned in the story. Ever since I read it I have wished I could visit Iceland, but my health prevents that. It must be a beautiful place with a lot of nice people!
