I teach a knife making class and as an example I forged this blade from a piece of W-1. I finally decided on what to do with it and am pleased with the results. It is a combination of a San Francisco dagger and a cowboy dagger.
The blade is 5in long, 7/8in wide at the widest and made of W-1. I heat treated with some clay to produce a hamon. I put in a little extra effort in polishing to bring out the hamon and Ashi. The guard is 416SS with a grove filed around the edge. The bolsters are 416 and held on with screws. There is a pin under the bolsters that holds the blade in the frame handle. The scales are amber stag with hidden pins. I fileworked the frame all the way around. The overall length is 9-3/4in.
Thank you for looking,
Chuck
