Most of you already know John of JK Knives. A lot of you probably have at least one of his fine knives in your collection. This brief review takes a look at something a little different... The JK Hatchet. I just picked this one up a week ago, but I've already had a chance to use it for several fireside prep chores.

As soon as we started heading into cooler temps, I started looking into a compact axe or hatchet that I could pair up with a small fixed blade or SAK to make a my "campfire combo". I remembered that another BF member (CBryant) had done a review of this hatchet some time ago, and that it really spoke to me at that time. The size and weight seemed just right and I really liked the traditional style.

John makes this one out of 1/4" O1 and the finished dimensions are 10 1/2" in length with a 3" cutting edge. I have several other small wood handled hatchets, but the thing that I like about this one is the one piece design. I wouldn't beat on the handle of my GB Mini to get it through a 4" seasoned round, but that is what this hatchet is made for. Even after the poll disappears below the surface, you still have 3" of spine in front of the scales to pound on.

It proved to be a great chopper as well, blasting through this length of seasoned oak in short order. I also used a choked-up grip to carve a point on an old axe handle to be used as a fire poker. The hatchet had very good control with this type of grip and of course had no problem slicing nice thin curlies of fatwood and kindling.

The grind is beautiful and the heat treat must be spot on as the blade is still shaving sharp after several fires worth of splitting and chopping. Needless to say, I'm quite happy with this one. It's already got a permanent home in my fireside bag. Thumbs up!

great stuff Jeff... those look like great hatchets.. i got to check out CBryant's last year.. they're nice and compact..

Very nice, I'd like to own something like that.

Compared to a GB Mini and the Tops hatchet that mistwalker reviewed, is it much more expensive?

don't know about the pricing on the GB axes in GB, and you said that the Tops Max the Axe would be roughly £100 more over there, but those two both seem to retail for about $150 here and the list price on the JK hatchet is $170. not a huge difference and you can choose your scales.

no clue about VAT, import duties or international shipping. sorry.

but JK has a "January Special" where he'll be offering a special price on the hatchet and his Riverwoods Companion knife together. here's the link

http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=778370

so that may put it closer to the price of the GB or Max. gotta say i think it looks better than the Max.

Thanks for responding to YB's questions fixer. And thanks to everyone for the comments.

Thanks for all the info!

If I wanted another GB Mini, I could get one for about £65 plus about £6 for Royal Mail delivery...So about £71 all in....or roughly $113

I found a Tops Mini in the UK selling brand new with delivery for £162.95, which is roughly $258!

Apart from GB axes (I'm not sure why this is?), we tend to pay what you guys do in the US, we take away the $ sign and add a £ sign. For example...if a product costs $100 then we pay £100 plus a bit more.

So for a hand made hatchet that costs $170, this seems like a good deal to me. Converting $170=£107

If I had a friend in America order me one, then ship it to me and if customs didn't charge tax, I could have a little beauty for not an exorbitant price.

Of course at the moment this is all dreams because I'm totally skint!

JDS1,

How much does the JK hatchet weight? I'm seriosly looking at the January Special.

That is a nice hatchet. I just ordered a GB Mini Hatchet yesterday from Wisemen's. Can't wait to get it. There some old, fallen trees at this pond where I go fishing. Going to spend a few hours clearing part of the path and making firewood piles this weekend. One tree in particular is covered in small branches and is lying right in the middle of a the trail. Should be a great job for Mr. Gransfors Bruks.

Jeff,

How do you think the hatchet would do out of 3/16ths? Would it be too light to be effective? I know it would be easier to carry!

Just my two cents... get the stock 1/4" model. You won't even notice the difference in weight. It feels just right.

I have a sudden urge to purchase a hatchet now. Thanks A LOT for sharing.

Seriously though, thanks for the post and some great pics.
