A look on the spyderco paramilitary 2... WARNING: Long Read & NO PICS

Sorry guys no pics this is just my take on the blade....
For starters this is my new edc... I've been packing it for about 3 months now, doing every day tasks (no destruction/abuse tests)... I mainly use it to cut zipties @ work and cardboard boxes/tape etc.
I'm not a huge spydie fan, I think they are ugly to be frank... but this little paramilitary 2 is growing on me, I've gotten so used to it that when I pick up one of my benchmades or emersons I'm looking for the hole (lol no pun intended)... Anyway the only other spyderco knife I own is the endura 4 so I'll try to compare it to that... The main difference is the grip, its g10 instead of FRN which I liken to a polymer... I like the endura 4 but I got the saber grind model (before the offered the full flat grind). The paramilitary 2 has a full flat grind, and man is it sharp. Right out of the box it just blazed through the cardboard it came in... cutting cardboard is how I test most of my knives sharpness... it is a real world use that you will encounter, it dulls some steels fairly quickly so u can see where your knife stands on edge holding, etc. I know its not scientific but its worked for me. Anyway the knife takes up a lot of room if clipped onto your pocket due to the bigger hole (14mm I think)... so I normally just carry it in my pocket instead of clipped, its a bit shorter than the endura, so that helps... weight is amazing, I mean this thing feels like a feather... The endura comes in @ 3.6oz and the para comes in @ 3.7... anyway u can't even tell its there, this is my favorite part about the knife, as I'm used to packing benchmades like the mini rukus which is a heck of a knife but you know its there, same w/ emersons... I can't say enough good about the para2... and at +/- $100 you're gettin a hell of a deal. However mine did come w/ a "sticky" opening, and its still there, the initial push of your thumb to open the blade is quite resistant. This is not so on the endura, so I donno if its my particular knife or the model in general. I had peeled my thumbnail back a few days before while working, it was still on the mend, and then while opening the para 2 my nail peeled back even further from the skin, resulting in some bleeding... now I'm no macho man, nor a wuss, but I think its a pain in the arse to have a cut/wound underneath the fingernail, takes forever to heal... anyway after 3 months of use the "resistance" of initial opening is still there, I've loosened the retention screw, I've oiled it etc... nothing helps it is still there... take it or leave it, this is my only complaint. This knife is great, I've seen some vids where guys are smacking it against some wood on the spine to get lock failure, and they acheived it. I don't use my folders to hammer (lol I leave that to my fixed blades) but I've put this thru everyday use and on one deer camp trip and it was wonderful...
Pros: Lightweight, Sharp, Spydie hole, The way the "leaf" shaped blade is u can really get in some deer carcuss to work around the rectum & diaphram... Good grippy g10 (and I've had this thing wet/bloody), tough.
Cons: That dang initial retention on the opening... other than that, its good to go.

I must admit i have never owned a spyderco but i have looked at the tenacious. So i was wondering is the opening hole uncomfortable in the pocket? Does it take up to much unnecessary room?

Well it does take up more room, yes... but its not soo much that you can't throw ur keys or whatnot in there too... My edc in my right jeans pocket is as such, Knife + car keys. I don't have a big "janitor" style key ring I only have about 5 keys on mine w/ a keyless entry remote... if I clip the blade on yes the hole hinders me getting to my keys quickly, however if I just toss the knife in my pocket it is no problem at all... If you are gonna clip the knife I would say have a dedicated pocket for it or at least put stuff in that pocket that you won't be grabbing for very often b/c the hole does get in the way when clipped.

The 'stickness' that you experience is actually the detent. I agree, the paramilitary 2 has a really strong detent. The benefit of such strong detent is to prevent accidental opening of the knife in your pocket.

Is this a serious question? It's a hole, how can it take up room?

I didn't read the giant wall of text in the OP, but... reviews with no pictures don't get much interest.

Well, the hole takes no space, BUT, ROFL the spine is a different story. Unless you wear really tiny/tight skinny jeans then there isn't a problem as far as I can tell. :D

Wall of text

Say what?

I own several Spydercoes. I don't notice the wider blade necessary to accommodate the opening hole any more than I notice the presence of an opening stud. Which is not at all.

LOL. CTS, you know what he meant. ;)
But it does raise interesting questions. Does a black hole take up space in the universe?

"Wall" might be a bit of an exaggeration, though I'll admit I lost interest half way thru.
Pics do help for sure.
And the OP might consider buying a paragraph (or 2 or 3) for readability.:D

Agreed. On most spydies the design is such that the hole (or blade space for it) flows naturally with the overall shape.
There are exceptions. On the Vallotton Sub-Hilt it sort of sticks out there and doesn't really "fit" the flow of the knife.

ROTFLM_AO. I need to go back to high school physics. There must be an answer... :D I will get back to you after I figure out how to get the sound meter app on my smartphone to measure the sound of one hand clapping.

I have a new Para 2 that I've been using non-stop for the last two weeks. On the subject of the strong detent that is something that I actually like. I previously owned an original Paramilitary and ended up selling it because the detent was too light. Never opened in my pocket but the blade would come open with a light shake. The Para2 is much improved.

Geez guys sorry to bore everyone lol... I agree reviews w/o picks do tend to well, suck. Cut me some slack as this is my first review (I don't like the word review as much as opinion)...
I did figure out if you reverse the clip for tip up carry the hole doesn't get in my way much... but the hole on the paramilitary 2 is 14mm (which is a few mm larger than on the older models)...
Again, didn't mean to rant and bore the hell outta anyone.
Later Dudes.

A few breaks into paragraphs might help.

As for the opening, I don't use my finger nail unless I need to flick open a knife. And that's almost never.

No worries man. People are just razzing you, not ill intentions I don't think. :)

Nice review.

Compared my Endura3 and my Para2 just sitting closed side by side and the Endura was actually taller than the Para2 despite having a much smaller hole.

Don't feel bad, people have read your thread. It's a good review: blunt and too the point. It's YOUR personal experiences with the knife. Keep it up!

I own several Spyderco's (endura 4, delica 4, tenacious, persistence, Tasman, and soon to be resilience, manix2, and para2) and several Benchmades (741 & 746) with the spider whole. And I've run into the same problem with ripping and gouging my thumb nail while deploying the blade, my solution was to take one of my course ceramic sharpening rods and knock down the sharp 90* angle on the inside of the whole. I the. Followed with the fine rod to smooth it all out. The result is a smooth deployment of the blade with the spider whole.

Best of luck and I hope that helps!
