Ah, the fall of the year, my favorite time. The Texas Renaissance Festival starts first weekend in October, November 1st brings the big Celtic Festival down in Austin, and November 15th the gathering of the Highland Clans.

Gotta start getting my "gear" squared away, starting with a new belt pouch and knife (pretty much standard issue items for medieval type folks). Uncle's sending me a good'un, a Kumar Karda, appropriately made by Kumar himself, with a snazzy carved handle. What about my nice wee Scramaseax, you ask? I'll be sporting that on my belt at Viking Fest next April, in full Viking garb. ;)

Speaking of all this, Dan, how's your medieval/renaissance stuff coming? Not a word out of you Duck, or I'll point the longship's prow towards Florida and come pillage your village.:D

I should have explained Bruise, I just ordered the KK today. Uncle Bill has near supernatural powers when it comes to getting stuff mailed out, but even he ain't that fast. I will post a pic when the knife gets here.

Attention HI shoppers, if you've been holding off on buying a Kumar Karda, I'd recommend you call/e-mail Uncle Bill and see if he's got anymore like the one he sent me. This latest batch was made by young Kumar himself, and he made a masterful job of it. No joke, I've owned examined several KK's, and this is one of the finest examples of the model I've ever seen. The handle is comfortable, and has a nice, graceful, downward curve to it. I don't mean it tilts off at an angle, I mean the handle is actually curved. It's black buffalo horn of such high quality it looks like a piece of polished jet or onyx. The carving is floral, but oddly, is in a style quite common in Norwegian floral/leaf wood carvings.

Ah, but the blade, the blade, simply outstanding. It exhibits a perfect distal taper throughout it's length, starting at the bolster, and terminating at the point, which is sharp enough to prick your finger like a thorn. If you've never handled a blade forged in such a fashion (i.e., full length distal taper) you would simply not believe how positively it affects handling and balance. The edge is straight and true, and excellently tempered (heads up to Keith who had a question about that regarding JKM-1s and KKs. Kardas and chakmas aside, I've never handled a primary blade from HI that wasn't zone hardened with a good tough edge). Two minutes, no-kidding two minutes, with an Arkansas stone and a strop loaded with Flexcut Gold had that puppy danged near as sharp as my good German straight razor. Unbelievable.

For whatever reason, the Sarki has switched from the old leather over wood scabbard and gone to a deep pouch dangler rendered in that sweet brown buffalo hide that graces the scabbard on my Bura New Model. There is absolutely nothing I need do to this knife, other than slip it on my belt, and it will easily pass muster at any medieval/renaissance event I care to attend. It's definitely a keeper. Many thanks Uncle Bill, and my sincere regards and complements to Kumar. A "Lordly" belt knife indeed.
