The order that supposedly left Nepal on May 14 arrived today! In it were four chandan handled Sirupatis and a special order for ghost along with some standard stuff from shop 1 and 2. Here's what I believe happened.

Some postal worker in Nepal played a waiting game. I've seen this happen before. He set the parcel aside and waited. If nobody showed up to complain in say three or four months he got not only the contents of the parcel but the cost of mailing, too. Kami Sherpa showed up at the PO with suggestions of cutting off the thief's hand and presto. A couple of weeks later here is the parcel. I was unable to read the sending date stamp. It was conveniently blurred.

Evidently sandalwood or something in this shipment was viewed as most valuable by US customs. They set a value of $1,500 on 16 khukuris.

Anyway, ghost will have at least one of his special orders soon and those who ordered the chandan handled khukuris will also be getting theirs soon. I want to post a pix of the chandan handles. They are beautiful! I am getting one for my own collection since I don't have one -- but not one of these. Mine is being made.

So, now only one parcel missing. Maybe it, too, will show up in a few days.

That's good news, Bill. I'm glad your worst fears were not realized.

Sometimes it would be nice if the U.S. had some of the practices of justice that is done overseas. Caning is just one thing that comes to mind. Using very big sharp instruments another.

Uncle Bill perhaps ghostsir will allow you to show us a pic of his piece. I know I would be drooling and it isn't good to drool close up. It makes the T.V. screen all messy, better it than the knives though.

email.

OK, Greg: I should have four more chandan handled siurpatis arriving soon. They went UPS express so should have no problems (I HOPE!)

The first four chandan are gone but I should be getting another four very soon -- I HOPE. Everybody should get theirs before it is all over so remember patience is a virtue.

Uncle Bill,

Glad to hear that the lost shipment arrived. You're right, Kami's talk about the thief losing his hand probably did the trick. We've talked about this, and you know as well as I do that out there many times, to get stuff done you have to do things differently than you would here in the US. That might mean greasing some palms here and there, or on the other hand, in situations such as this, it might mean some sort of a "show of force" to make folks see the error of their ways.

My father, old-fashioned guy that he was, always drove around with his Patang (Tibetan sword) and his khukuri, and on occasions such as this (supplier "losing" the shipment for the umpteenth time, agent overcharging bills "by mistake" etc.), some serious words, backed up by the sight of the blades usually did the trick!

It is a different world over there, nephew, as we both know from experience. Old Gurkhas have their way of dealing with it and it often works.

Bottom line is the khukuris finally got here and for that I am very thankful. Whatever works!
