I have always been pleased to respond to members questions; now I will be off of the internet for a while.

There is a big question mark (??) in my future; I have been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. That is the bad news; the good news is that it may be early enough to be treated. I had a stent placed in my liver last Thursday, March 13th, and I am currently scheduled for surgery on April 8 at the University of California, Davis Medical Center in Sacramento. The surgery planned is called a "Whipple procedure". It consists of surgically removing the lower portion of the stomach, the deuondenum portion of the intestine, the gall bladder and a portion of the pancreas, and the reconstruction of a common bile duct. Obviously, this is a major operation (eight hours) and I am told that there can be many complications.

I am confident that our God is in control and I know that He has a plan that will cause this to work for good (Romans 8:28) and for His glory. I don’t have too many clues on what that includes but I am sure He will reveal it to me in due time. He has given me a fabulous life and I will continue to lean on my Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ, for my strength. I covet your prayer support and I am still asking for a miracle prior to April 8th. If God says “No”, I will continue to serve Him and trust Him for what He knows is best.

Vern,

As a "rookie" Buck Collector, my time in the BCCI has been tremendously enhanced by your knowledge and willingness to share what you know with anyone that asked. Your time away from the internet, I'm certain, will be missed by many.

God's Blessing on your health, and God's Speed on your recovery from the surgical proceedure you are facing. One thing I learned a long time ago is that there is a Master Plan for all of us, even though we have no idea what that plan is. Our job is to just keep doing the best we can, and follow the directions God gives us. All things happen in His time - just keep in mind that he doesn't wear the same wristwatch you and I do.

I, for one, look forward to your healthy return. - Take Care !!!

My heart goes out to you and Pam. You guys have taken some real life obstacles and have always relied on God, and he has always seen you through to some better place.

The operation you described sounds like quite a procedure.

I know you have heard my grandfather tell his "hand" story so I relate it to the group and remind you that God is in control and all works to the good for those who believe in him.

In the 40's my grandfather Al, worked nights at a meatpacking plant here in San Diego. He was a night watchman and made a little extra cleaning out meat grinding machines. He had a trick that he would kick the machine on and off and use the slowly moving blades to dislodge residue from grinding. One night, somehow his hand was caught in the blades and almost severed accross his knuckles the middle, ring and pinkie. There were only sulphur drugs available so the doctor wanted to amputate and avoid infection (remember the wound was full of sausage from the grinder). Before they put my grandfather out, he leaned up to the doctor and said do not take my hand, just put it back and let god heal it.

The procedure involved scraping bone into piles to "look like knuckles" and give the appearance of a normal hand although the fingers would not move.

When they took the bandages off, much to the amazement of the doctor my grandfather could bend those knuckles. It was impossible cause there were no knuckles there but there he was bending his hand. If that had not taken place Buck would not have been here cause Al would not have been able to make knives. God had a plan and it definitely worked out well for my grandfather, who had incredible faith.

I printed a copy of this for my Dad so we will both be praying for you.

Vern,
Please know that our prayers are with you. I have faith that the Lord will comfort you and guide the hands of the surgeon. Make a rapid recovery, you still have many good things to offer mankind.

Vern, you and your family will on our prayer list at church as well as my own prayer list. I have enjoyed your posts on the forum. May the peac of God that surpassed all human understanding fill your hearts and minds.

What matters to you matters to God because YOU matter to God!

Vern,
I have to say that your faith is inspiring to say the least. When I read the first part of the post, I felt despair and was very sad at the news. Then your second paragraph lifted me back up again! You certainly have the right outlook.
I remember that you and Pam were there for me a few years back, keeping me in prayer, now I will gladly return the favor.
You can be sure that my family will keep you in our prayers as we ask the Lord to give you a speedy recovery.
Take care,

Vern,

You and your family are in our prayers. I know you'll pull through this with our Lords help.

Take care,

The Buck 709 that I wrote of in this thread is a knife I received in a trade with Vern (whom I've never had the pleasure of meeting face to face). During a given week, I generally carry any of a few different knives with me here in the office: the 709, a 526 Executive, a Case 2-blade penknife, and a Victorinox Classic. In support of Vern, however, I'm going to retire all of my other workday/office carry knives and only carry this one until he's licked this. Good luck, Vern. You can beat it, pal!

I missed this thread but I just read the newsletter. Vern, be steadfast in your faith, and finish well.

I spoke with Vern yesterday. He just arrived home from a chemo treatment. The chemo has slowed the growth of his tumor. His spirits were wonderful and his faith in the Lord is still strong. He fully intends to attend the club's 15 year anniversary event in July. I look forward to seeing him there.
