A method for discrete carry in dress pants

To me, the secret of descrete carry in dress pants is to find a way to comfortably carry inside the pocket without a clip showing, and this is not simple. Carried loose in the front pocket, a large pocket knife will drop to the bottom of the pocket and lay sideways across the front of your thigh and this is uncomfortable and also makes a visible lump in your pants (it "prints" through the pants). The back pocket is not much better and is uncomfortable to sit on.

I have come up with a way to make the knife stand upright in the front pocket and stay against the side of the pocket near the side seam of the pants. In that position it is comfortable, does not print much or at all, and is easy to access. The method requires you to divide the pocket into two smaller sub-pockets by either sewing a seam through the pocket, or more simply to install a row of safety pins to divide the pocket. In this way, you can make a small-sub pocket along the outer seam just the right size for a knife. I have tried to make a text art diagram showing the outline of a pocket below. The letter K shows the position of the knife. It's easier to do than explain. Here's the diagram:

************
Dress Pants,
Right Front Pocket,
As seen from inside the pants.
Knife "k" is in a sub-pocket near the side seam of the pants.
The opening on the upper right is where your hand goes into the pocket.

It works well up to about a 4.5" knife (folded length) depending on the pocket and the knife. Flatter knives obviously print least, for example, Benchmade 530 and many Kershaw and Spyderco. Removing the clip helps, too. For me, this has worked well for a couple of years and is more discrete than IWB or pocket clipping. The legality of concealing is an issue, so know your laws. I like this method for my casual pants as well (but not jeans). Maybe it's just me, but I don't always want anyone and everyone to know what I am carrying.

What do you think? Useful or is there a better/simpler way to conceal?

I just carry a smaller, thinner knife (loose in my pocket) when I dress up....... ;)

I continue to struggle with all of the cr@p I want to carry, and the limited space available to do so. Some folks carry a folder clipped inside the waistband, with the clip between the pants and belt.

I carry a knife with a matt black clip and it does not stand out when clipped on my dark dress pants.

BINGO! That's how I carry my XL Voyager. Unless I'm shirt out and then back in the pocket. Secret is having dark trousers and dark clipped knife. Rarely any one notices as generally folks are more worried about thier own issues.

That's what I do. Or you can clip a knife to the inside pocket of your suit coat.

This is exactly why I look for knives with foldover deep carry clips, or do some tinkering of my own and make a foldover clip that will work. If all you have showing is the clip and that clip is muted down in color, I cover mine with some black 3M Stair Step tape, it becomes almost invisible. Either everyone I come into contact with is so accustomed to me having a knife, or just don't realize that the clip has a knife on the other side, or just don't see the clip, that I haven't been asked about what is in my pocket for at least a year or longer.:) And that's fine by me!

When I carried a flashlight all the time, I sewed up my jeans pockets to keep the light (surefire G2) from riding horizontally, which was really awkward. In a suit I normally carry a smaller slipjoint or a slim ~3" folder.

I like to carry a small peanut, Dr. knife or whittler.
Something to be said about a knife that is 3 inches or less with 5 or 6 inches of blades to use.

I did not know it at the time I purchased them but I have a couple of pairs with vertical sewn in pockets in the right front pocket.

Lurker, this idea has been mentioned here before. Most recently in the Chris Reeve forum. This was the solution I had been looking for. For me, it’s perfect. At my place of employment, I can't have anything clipped to my dress pants. Too many frightened customers.
Also, I hated having to dig around in my pocket for my knife when I needed it. This was a perfect solution. Of course the wife wasn't too happy about having to sew a seam into 20 or so pairs of pants.

I have a pocket holster , prints like a wallet , or I go IWB . If Im carrying a gents knife , I clip it in the breast pocket of my shirt ( no one ever notices ) , even LEOs an experienced folders freaks seem to overlook it . The CRK Mnandi is the perfect shirt pocket carry , William Henry also makes some great candidates .

Dressing up for me is just a newish pair of black jeans. Knife? Not a problem.

I don't know about you but my last four pairs of dress pants all came with small pocket already sewed in. Perfect a single cell light, 3" folder, or a small fixed blade.

I never worried about it until you brought it up. Now I'm gonna have to go messing with all my pockets. Damn...

When wearing slacks or suit trousers, I just drop my 710 D-2 in like any other pocket knife. I don't even notice that it's there. :p

BTW, I removed the clip.

Same here - mine were the cheap (<$15) slacks from Wal-Mart, with the all important elastic waistband for my ever-increasing gut.

ACH! that's where my pocket watch would go if I wore such duds. That's why I wear jeans. It has a place for my watch.
