It's mid spring and I am still collecting photos for my flora data base, so I thought I'd share some pics from the last outing.
Clearings and tree lines are always crowded areas with all of the plants competing for the sunlight. So they are always of interest to me.
Blackberry patches are busy places.
Bull thistle still looks like an alien plant to me...
Chickory will never be able to replace coffee for me, no caffeine, but being a devout coffee addict I am still glad I know how to identify it just in case...
Lots of buzzing insects here: flies, bee flies, bees, and hornets.
Wolf spiders are quite common here
Sow Thistle
The garlic is about to start flowering
The onions have been for a while
Couldn't resist playing with the Dandelions...
Much cooler under the shade of the canopy, and it's much easier to eat an apple in peace if you aren't standing a midst a bunch of flowers and bees...
Scottish Thistle growing just inside the interior
A lot of false Solomon's Seal here
The false Solomon's Seal flowers remind me of Foam Flower
Then there is also a lot of actual Solomon's Seal here as well
Poison Ivy could easily be the regional flower, it is quite prolific here. Taking in all of the pollen in the air may even be one of the reasons that most of us here aren't allergic to it. Some large vines will eventually kill the trees they cling to if left unchecked.
Big Leaf Magnolia are called such because...well...they have big leaves. They have the largest simple leaf and single flower of any plants native to North America.
Lunch was pretty simple, just some sharp cheddar, some black forest ham, and some cheese bread from a local bakery.
I whittled a few feather sticks from a seasoned maple branch while I munched, but there was no way I was starting a fire. It was warm, lunch was pre-cooked, and I really didn't have time as I had a lot of ground to cover. Bigger sticks make bigger feather sticks
Some deer remains a little ways off the trail.
A couple of crow feathers
Found this guy happily munching on the bottom of a leaf, I might have scared the piss out of him....
And getting back to one of my favorite clearings I noticed the Wine Raspberries are coming along nicely.
Happy Friday everyone
